That's mad 😆 but he can ask whatever he wants.
I missed an exact same spec car, from a dealer in Durban, in June this year.
Car was priced at R599k and sat for 3+ months before they dropped it to R549k and sold in a week.

I doubt he would even get R600k

E90 M3 doesn’t have as strong appeal as the E92 variant; yes there are E90 M3 followers, however the E92 followers are probably 4 times as much if not more.

The owner is then faced with a much smaller audience and higher mileage car (relatively speaking for high performance cars).

There is one on facebook listed for R390k ….conditions might differ somewhat but don’t think the gap is twice as much in price.

As others have alluded to, the owner can ask whatever they want, R800k, R1m, we are just making an input to guide.

At the end of the day, The invisible hand of the market will prevail (leading to either being sold or prices adjusted downwards in line with market).

Every pot has its lid!

@op, advise your buddy that he's off by likely around 250-300k on asking. High mileage, common colour and auto are all gonna stop this from ever being the really desirable E9X m3.

It is an LCI though.... 👀 And those are pretty rare.

There was an LCI that was on Autotrader for nearly a year, same colour, similar mileage, think it was priced at about R550k, may well be the one that Eust is referring to.

This is the time when we come in as gatekeepers. LOL. The question is; is this car desirable or collectable? It's important to know the factors that make a car desirable and/or collectable which will ultimately influence asking and selling price.

Approximate count:
  • For the global market, 65,985 E9x M3’s were made by BMW (that compares to 85,766 E46 M3’s)
  • A total of 14,168 of these were made in RHD (Compared to 20,286 E46 M3’s in RHD)

If there are 66 000 of something only the absolute best (and I really do mean, best colour, 0 miles, manual gearbox etc. etc) will become collectible. A normal 100 000km car of a common colour, with the less desirable gearbox in the 2nd least desirable body configuration (I'd assume it's coupe>sedan>cab) is never ever going to be the cream of the crop. This is a well maintained driver being priced at collector car levels. Maybe in another 10yrs time when even more E9xs have been ruined and there's another 10yrs of inflation R1m E9x m3s is realistic, but we're a way off that now.

And of course, I have to jump in with the obligatory inflation and 'investment' caveats LOL: with another 10 years of inflation, that R1M will be worth even less than it is currently. I have to assume that the guys who religiously observe these markets believe that nothing else in the world is static.

Even in the case of the E46 CSL that has 'appreciated' in value according to most people, it would cost an inflation adjusted R2.65M currently... Even the CSL has lost value at R2.35M, which the journos at Carmag described as 'a whopping' amount. It has absolutely NOT been a good investment in absolute terms. Even with a measly 26000km on it, It has lost 11% of its value not accounting for maintenance and insurance costs. Not bad at all for a vehicle... but that was no investment :ROFLMAO: Even then, it is a price that VERY few people are able to or willing to spend and even then, probably only in collector grade states. Has it made some money for people along the way? Probably. Did it stand the test of time as an investment? Nope.

Good luck to anyone hoping to make this their retirement plan AND use these cars.

I like what has been mentioned in this thread about something being desirable vs collectable. Definitely something to take note of. I may be biased, but it is most definitely desirable.

I guess there are so many ways to look at it, numbers only (in relation to other vehicles), rarity, condition, and so on. As mentioned, compared to a F80, yes this is in the same ballpark, but swing it to the other end of the scale. People with clean E30s who "know what they've got" are charging hundreds of thousands of Rands. I'm willing to bet this (or any modern car) is X times a better car than an E30.

There's other angles of looking at what you can get new (or newer) for R500k-R800k, that is an eye-opener for those who haven't done so recently. New 1-Series starts at R705k, new 3-Series is R905k, Hell, 3 months ago, I priced a new G80 and it was R2.06m on BMW's website, now it's R115000 more expensive.

Ultimately, Humans are silly creatures, and we don't always do things rationally (whether it be pricing something for sale, or buying something for sale). We justify things every which way, and hope the stars align as well so that it all works out in the end.

Back on topic though, this does look like a great example. It may or may not get R800k, but it will sure as nuts be a pretty penny.
