Andrew,

I according to RealOEM, they are the same..

Price bud ?

Funny enough, the same CD shuttle even appears to be used in the Mini, according to realOEM of course... which we all know is dodgy

LZ spoke to my dad.. The CD shuttle costs R650 from the dealers on special order only. He said he will accept R450 for it (its brand new, in box & all) Let me know

Hey Zale, sorry for the delayedness! I don't know how I missed this thread! This thing looks awesome. I was wondering about your question about what am I saying about M5 drivers. I didn't know you got it yet. Congrats and enjoy the beast

So a bit of an update...

The E39 has taken the back seat to the car shuffe and then the E46 and stuff..

She finally got a 35 tint today from SecondSkynz, Jason you do fantastic work dude...

Photo's soon after she has had a decent valet/maybe a detail....

However, clutch went poof on me today, it slips past 3500 rpm, badly....

So new clutch 4k for LUK,

Awesome friends to loan you BMW specific tools and moral support, Free.......

Going to DIY this weekend,

THen she is off for a new windscreen, windscreen beading and that cowling is horrid.

Then serious clean up

I was going to do a rod bearing DIY before the clutch, but I kinda dont have a choice now, will have to drive her another month without doing the rod bearings...

Oh well, thats where we are in the E39 world, thauight I would share

Not cool...

Are you sure about the Luk replacement? When I wanted one the guy from Starbrake was unsure if it would work in the M5. Something about it being the same as the 540 and that LUK doesn't have one listed for the M5. Can't remember the exact conversation but it left me a little worried about doing a non-oem clutch change.

Post up some pics of the change!

Purchased from Starbrake.

Luk par number 341MK.

Theoretically it will work, I will do a direct comparison to the one I take out, if it is not an exact spec match, I will just return and buy OEM...

The clutch that I got from star brake turns out to be a clutch for the new spec 330d.

However, before one panics, lets think about this logically. The new E90 330d is pushing about 500Nm torque in standard form, and thats before the guys go mod crazy, and the clutch holds. The E39 M5 Nm rating is also about 500Nm in stock form (depending who's website you believe)

Now Starbrake says the clutch in question is a direct fit onto the M5 flywheel, this was confirmed by Uber (theorically) as the clutch fits perfectly onto his 540/6 flywheel which is supposed to be identical.

Also, I have checked with a popular SA performance tuner, and he has claimed that when he builds high torque motors, he actually uses the x30d flywheel and clutch config.

Starbrake says he has sold this configuration to about 6 guys already, one of them was to a mate with an E39 M5 and that clutch has been good for about 2 years (dont know the km's travelled)

I also have it from another very reliable source at BMW that this will work, very unofficially of course.

So now... fsck it, theory is this, if the clutch is exactly the same thing, its half price, if I get 75% useful life out the clutch compared to the M clutch, who cares, its still half price....

As for the labour to change it, its a piss easy job, its a long job but really easy as its all mechanical stuff, and may TIS documents out.

I started last night at about 8:30 and by 12 I had the exhaust driveshaft, heatshields, and all except 2 gearbox bolts out, the ones at the top of course.

I recon another hour and the box is on the ground, and I can start changing. However I am afraid my rear main seal looks like it is pissing out, based on what I saw through the slave cylinder.

Anyway, call it a saturday full day to change the clutch........

I'll keep you guys posted
