Thanks guys!

Similar to the E46, the plans for this one is repairs / maintenance with a few small upgrades / retrofits... I like enjoying these cars for what they are, and giving them the care they deserve. It's sad when they fall into the wrong hands.

Another small update,

The intake boots are a known weak point on these cars and the E46s, having inspected mine I decided that it was definitely worthwhile replacing them. Relatively cheap at around 520 after discount for both.

On to the pics..

Old ones definitely tired..

Gave the engine bay a quick clean to get rid of the evidence

All in all for such a small job, the car feels much smoother. She is almost back to her former glory...

Next up was carpet cleaning, the colour is a real pita but so pretty when clean :blowheart:

Glad you are enjoying the E39,

Makes me long for one.

I want to park both my Ci's (drive them on odd occasions),
I have already put 20 000km on the 325Ci :dunnoanymore:

I'll get a 530i as a daily (to replace my e46 sedan)

E39 5 series had to be one of the most timeless BMW's ever made. It still looks fresh and modern today especially with the lights updated. I would love to drive a manual 540i or e39 M5 some day or even better, own one :smilebounce: Your car looks awesome. Well done on taking such good care of her :praise:

Kyle i think you need to do a proper car cleaning thread with products and techniques etc...you get some EXCELLENT results!

I am so glad to see that you have a heat shroud installed between the hot exhaust section, and the ABS unit.

Those ABS units dont like the heat at all, very "silly" of BMW to mount it in the engine bay, so close to the hot exhaust.

In my E39 530d, the ABS started failing shortly after the 200k km region, and it is a known failure in older E39's.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Just trying to give the car the care that it deserves..

With regards to cleaning products, everything I use can be found on

www.dscosa.com/shop :smilebounce:

Thinking of doing an electric fan conversion, although it seems a bit more complicated than the E46 conversion...

Kyle,

If possible, can you write a few words based on your personal experience ito comparison between the e39 and e46.

Driving pleasure,
Handling,
Comfort,
Acceleration (how they pull given the extra weight in e39)

I'm about to pull a trigger on one......I.e. E39 530i
I guess I need reassurance :fencelook:

Thanks,
Vince

Hi Vince,

Not a problem, they are surprisingly really different cars... The E46 feels much stiffer with a sportier focus, although the steering is lighter.

Some of the switchgear on the E39 does look rather dated now, remember this chassis came out on 1996 so expect similar switchgear to the E36 and not the E46, you can definitely tell the difference in generation.

In terms of comfort the E39 definitely wins here, seats feel like lazyboy sofas, much more sound deadening and the ride is very smooth, but surprisingly still a decent amount of feedback from the road. The car was designed to be a tad more luxurious than the entry level 3 series and it shows.

In terms of acceleration, I wouldn't really be in the position to give an accurate comparison (330 vs 525), I can tell the chassis has been tuned to give a more relaxed approach, whereas the 330i tends to hurt your neck a little.

However

Personally, I enjoy jumping in the E46 more as a daily driver.. Just a really well designed car all round, and you can definitely tell that the E39 was designed before the E46...

To summarise, the E39 is quieter, softer and more comfortable than the E46, but for me the E46 is a more exciting drive...

Thanks, really great feedback.

I think the 5er will serve the purpose I need, especially if I can find one with comfort seats. I'll use the 325Ci for fun spirited driving, and the 5er as a luxury cruiser. The 330Ci for that odd Sunday drive with the kids with the drop off.

Sounds like a great plan.

I have someone coming to have a look at the e46 sedan that I have to free up funds. 2 neat 530is are available now, At good prices too.

Hi All,

Finally got round to doing the gearbox oil change this past weekend... All in all a really easy job if you have a lift.

The kit, OEM filter and gasket, LM ATF. The guides called for 7l but only used 4.5. Process as follows:

1. With the car warm (there are specific recommended temps but meh) loosen the fill plug t0 make sure it isn't seized.
2. Drain old oil
3. Remove sump being weary of oil spillage.
4. Remove old filter and fit new one.
5. Clean sump and magnets thoroughly
6. refit sump with new gasket
7. Fill new oil until it leaks out the fill plug
8. Start car and run through gears
9. Top up oil until it flows out of the fill plug again (mine took a further 400ml)

Not too much on the magnets, looks like we caught it in time

Shifts feel smoother now although these things tend to have a placebo effect. The old lady was then returned to her old age home where she spends her days :smilebounce:
