i have no idea how to read that,

I'm not the most clued up, but the green means activity/clouds. The harsher the colours (shading), the more severe a storm, with red being probable hail.

The red contours with arrows show the direction in which a cell is moving, the contour showing the future location within a half hour, if I remember correctly.
