The 328i is really only a 2.0 litre!? No wonder my 135i murdered it. Why call it a 328i then? So what is the 335i then?

328i = 2.0l twin turbo. 335i = 3.0l twin turbo. 135i = 3.0l twin turbo.

So ya as basic math would show you 3 > 2.

so why are you suprised your 135 is faster than a 328i?

Old 328i. e46 and e36 = 2.8l straight six

Remember, the new range of 3 series engines, is TwinPower, NOT twin turbo. Single turbo, twinscroll.
The x35 N55 is also single turbo, and the older x35 N54 is twin turbo!

O ya thanks Riaan. Remembered now its Twin Power turbo and not twin turbo power. N54 were twin turbo

Yep, sorry, also guilty of referring to them as twin-turbo instead of twin-scroll...

Don't worry about it Phillip. I had to explain to a BMW salesman what twin power means :biglol:

Steptronic is an auto box that allows you to manually shift.

DCT is basically a manual box with 2 clutches which are automatically controlled. You can either choose to paddle shift it or have it in auto.

Question: dct gear changes faster than steptronic? the reason i am asking is if you look at the 328i video the gear changes are blistering fast (like VW DSG box) now the new 3 series.. is it a steptronic box fitted in 320d & 328i.. or dct?

As far as I know they have steptronic only. Might be an option but I dont think so. DCT does change faster than steptronic.

In all honesty though... I figure you would have to feel the changes and the differences between them rather than watching a video... to quote Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins "Does it come in black?"...

I honestly think this 8 speed automatic gearbox is really good for what it is! If it's anything like the E90 auto then it's already not bad from the point of view that it only had a 2% loss of power to the rear wheels compared to the manual. And this gearbox's gear changes are plenty quick enough as it is, so although the DCT is the better technology, it's most likely not that much better in reality - at least that's how it seems.

Of course the 'purist' in me prefers good old manual gearboxes, and anything that does lacks a clutch pedal is considered an automatic at the end of the day. But, this is still more choice than anything else - the performance of this automatic gearbox and for that matter, the one that the E90 320d courtesy car had, was really impressive and really cannot fault it!

I agree. When comparing a DCT box to the new 8 speed steptronics, we are dealing with fractions of a second. My gripe with older boxes was that they took their time to changes, as if they were thinking about your choice. Seems to have been resolved quite nicely.

I just had one issue with the 328i and the steptronic, and that's the time it took to get off the mark, if you see the video it literary took up-to 3 seconds to get to 4000 rpm in 3rd run i did. Rowling start is cool, but from standstill its a nightmare, by that time my grandmas Ford lazor 1300 is 30m ahead......

Yes. RFT is standard. But you dealing with new technology that infuses the RFTs with the entire suspension package. The ride quality is superb. The previous RFTs were harsh...but not anymore.

You wont go back to the old fashioned rubber & tube :nonono:
