discussion To respray or not to respray?

Hey everyone, quick question. Santam approved my vehicle to go in for some dings that occurred when I was parked somewhere. Seems both the passenger and driver knocked my car. The driver actually took a small (2mm by 2mm) chip out the pain/clearcoat on the rear driver side door (passenger door). I cant see metal but its much darker paint. Santam approved SMG BMW Repair Center to repaint my door. In terms of resale value and future issues, is it best to repaint or to leave the chip? (They are also respraying the bumper due to a paint crack which is unavoidable).

I think it might differ from person to person.

Personally I would not mind it having been resprayed provided a good job was done.
You can take some before and after photos to show future potential buyers and prove that it was not due to major accident damage.
Its also having the work carried out by BMW ARC and not by some backyard spray painter or a company trying to cheap out on the paint and prep.

If I were interested in a vehicle and it was presented to me in such a way, I wouldn't have any issues.
Your car is driven, its not a garage queen, wear & tear is expected and chips and cracks are not appealing.

Sounds reasonable, thank you!

This is a tricky one, as i would say respray.

How ever - Automagic Stridom park sprayed my car.
After a year the paint started bubbling on a small section, then water actually was getting under the bubble. They tried to say it was my fault as the bottom of the bumper was scraped.

They repainted the front bumper.

After this The clear coat failed after a year and a half. i took it back to them.
I hand wash my car with Meguires and two bucket method, never goes to a car wash.

They re applied the clear coat, then they actually burnt my pain on the top of the fenders and doors with their polisher. After the third time i didn't even bother going back.

Will have to get it done somewhere else eventually.

so chose your panel shop very carefully. It just takes the wrong painter or even the lil junior guy who polishes the car after the work is done to completely destroy your paint and create new issues that were not even there before.

Paint sinkage etc. is not visible until some time passes.

I would avoid a respray if possible.

The most expensive panel shops are failing these days.

Im not Suprised AutoMagic name came up.

Had an insurance Claim once with VW Velocity i had few years back. Car colour Was ShadowBlue ... Its like Blue with litte purple flip.
Had incident at office where some Clown decided to Key the car all around. Roof and Mirror caps was not damaged. I wanted the car to go to Ludski Autobody as they done all my insurance work in the past but insurer said no. take it to AutoMagic in Stikland.

They painted the car and when i went to fetch it and they pulled the car out for me, The manager was so impressed with their work. So i asked him if its a joke? and he acted like nothing was wrong.

The roof and Mirrors were not painted and was oringinal colour. The rest of the car they painted was More Purple than blue. :|
Wrong COLOUR! and this bra made as if its my imagination. that was a R25k job they did
Drove car to Assessors offices and i never told them what is wrong, I just asked them to Look at it and tell me whats wrong. he said "The car is 2 colours. did the paint it the wrong colour???" LMAO!

They contacted Automagic To redo it but i said no, Its going to Ludski. Insrurer again Refused to send to ludski and they Sent it to Farbers Coachworks in epping.

This time Farbers charged insurer R30k to Repaint the WHOLE car. Mind you, we took fotos of the car before. When the car was done at Farbers, I went to fetch the car. When i got there, the Asessor was not there yet.

As soon as he pulled up he was like "WTF MAN. ".... Whole car was now 1colour .... but the wrong colour. LMAO! was more purple than blue.
i said leave it as it is as im done with this drama, and i requested farbers to just redo the bonnet as there were 2 fingerprints on it. They flatted it down and prepped for paint. As soon as they mixed and layed down paint, They called me and said "the colour on the car is wrong. the bonnet does not match." lol

so it turned out, AutoMagic Messed up because their Machine mixed the colour wrong. Insurer tried to recoupe money from them and they Got Automagic to Mix 5l Paint (WRONG COLOUR) and insurer gave that to Farbers to paint the WHOLE CAR the wrong colour.

Now we in a predicament where whole car is WRONG colour and bonnect is right colour, R45k was spent on a car which was then more than its book value and then the insurer tells me they going to Right the car off. :|.

I just laughed at them. after much Back and forth, I got a quote from ludski to fix all this nonesense, they quoted 42k to fix. i negotiated with Insurer to pay me 32k cash and i will pay the xtra 10k to have it done properly. They Paid it and they said i cannot insure the car with them again. :|

I went to Ludski, told them to match the Paint of the WRONG colour and spray the bonnet. Lol Costed me like 1k. and the Paint corrected the rest of the car . then i sold it.

Moral of that very long story for OP, If you going to paint, Make sure its by the right people. you have a right to tell your insrance where you want to take it to. They refuse because those not on the list dont charge them special rates. but make it knoWn to them in writing that if its not done properly, You want it done elsewhere.

unfortunately, the skills that previously existed in the market to do this properly dont exist at MOST (not all) panelshops.
There are many who wont care why your car was repainted, only that it was ever at all.

Decent places can prepare, mask, paint and blend these kind of things properly.
Honestly however, once a car door is removed including all the trim, it never goes back to factory install and then theres always creaks, rubber that pulls or doesnt seal and go back the way it came from the factory.

I tend to avoid panel work which requires removal and reassembly in favour of - mask, prep, pain and blend approach.

I mainly dealt with Ricardo/faried them in parts division. But from what i heard in the past, Arc SMG tygervally are pretty decent.

Just make sure you inspect nicely when you collect

DOubt they will remove these panels to paint.

Depending on the colour of the car, More like a prep, spray and blend into the panels to the left and right of it as its a flat Surface area so they will need to blend
