My new to me daily, replacement for the 228i

15 months ago, I started looking for a replacement to my 2013 Audi S6, mainly due to nightmares about possible repair bills if/when something should break.
I decided I wanted to get back to basics. This meant something relatively small, 2-door, hard top, but with usable rear seats, and decent performance. Also should not be too old.
I'd already owned an Audi A5 3.0T quattro, and didn't want to go that route, and besides the the A5 was a bit larger than I wanted.
I'd also had an Audi TT, and really loved that car, but the lack of usable rear seats precluded it from being a viable choice.
Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ was out because of the rear seats and lack of power.
Same for any Porsche Boxster or Cayman.
Have never been a fan of Merc.
Scirocco R was considered, but having to deal with FWD again put me off.
Basically the only car which even came close was the 2 series, and I was deciding between the cheaper 228i M Sport or M235i.
I test drove examples of both, but at the time, didn't want spend north of R400k for an M235i.

Fast forward to 3 months ago when I noticed a M235i manual on AutoTrader which looked clean, wasn't completely poverty spec, but at R400k was too pricey for my wants. Every now and again I'd have a look to see if the car was still there, and about 4 weeks ago I saw the price had dropped. A week later the price dropped again, and then again, until I finally it was at a level I was comfortable with.

I went to have a look, and overall the car was clean both inside and out. Went for a test drive, and was happy. After having lived with the 228i for over a year, it was immediately apparent how much smoother the straight six is compared to the four pot, and I've been quite impressed with the 2.0, especially having come from a 4.0 twin turbo before that...it's a great little powerplant.

Anyway, sold the 228i the next day, and picked up the M235i yesterday.

Very nice. Congratulations.
When are you taking it out to stretch it’s lungs a bit? We should arrange a Breakfast run.

@viceroy excellent choice.
See that you are enjoying the Bavarian side a bit more, which is great.

I posted this video before, but reposting it for you - shows how phenomenal this old 35i (6 pot) is against the neutered new 35i (4 pot)...

So the car already had a few mods installed, namely metal charge pipe (YAY :) ), catless downpipe (meh 😐) and MPE (šŸ¤‘). Also has pops 'n bangs loaded (😵).

It may just be my age, but I'm really finding the exhaust volume quite obnoxious especially on cold start, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to start getting some passive aggressive notes slid under my front door from the neighbors soon.

So my question, does the MPE contribute mostly to the loudness? I know the DP does add a bit as well as a hollow metallic tone I'm not overly fond of, but can live with if I decide to pop on a proper stg2 tune some day.
Does MPE add anything to performance on an otherwise stock engine?

I'm really considering sourcing a stock M235i / M240i rear section to replace the MPE, but right now I'm undecided.

Stock exhaust with DP is a good sounding set up, MPE with stock DP also sounds good. Both together is too much for my aging ears too

Lovely car, congrats!

Haven't heard how loud the car is, but seems like a waste removing the MPE.
I guess you're going to have to do a proper stage 2...

the MPE alone is probably the best setup for sound other than your current setup, before I did DP it was very liveable and considerate to neighbors, can't really comment on the DP with stock box setup but I'm guessing it is going to be loud as you have pops and bangs also. There is a cold start cancellation on the MHD settings if you running MHD and your problem is more the cold start than anything else(my case). Also with just MPE your car will backfire on its own as is, joys of having a manual, don't think the pops and bangs are necessary(just my 2c on that) update us with the setup you go with and the results

Lots of Googling and Youtubing last night, and it would appear the catless DP is most at fault for being obnoxious, especially at cold start. I can live with the sound of the exhaust while driving.

Conclusion right now : I doubt I'm going to find an OEM catted DP for reasonable money or in good condition, so looking at software. Quite a bit sooner than I'd planned on doing a tune, but there seem to be two main options.
1) MHD : $601 for the Super license and dongle or $482 for Flasher license, map pack and dongle. Does one really need the monitoring license if one already has something like Bimmerlink?
2) Bootmod3 : $595 for the package, and I already have a cable. Extra $50 for access to all maps.

I'm leaning towards BM3 at the moment as it seems to offer a lot more in terms of customization, but MHD does have the advantage of being able to do everything straight from your phone out of the box.
