Tempting, but since the gearbox is rated for 390Nm operating and 420Nm max, and since the engine is already producing 410Nm, I would rather not boost more at this mileage... If it was a manual, I wouldn't think twice.

Do you by any chance now what the maxim torque rating would be for the 540iA ?

I was also considering a few mods but seeing as the car is now 11 years old and it has 203414km on the clock I would also not realy like to take the chance of putting extra power on the main components ie gearbox,propshaft etc etc.

An E39 540i should have a 5hp30 ZF transmission, also known as a A5S560Z. Generally, it is rated at to handle torque of 560nm (the 560 part of the number). There is usually a little safety margin included in that rating, so there is quite a bit of room for improvement (I believe that motor is rated at 450nm standard?). And if something goes wrong, just pop in a manual and double the fun! Speak to clutchplate about that.
