Motor plan vs Warrenty

Hi guys, this is possibly a very stupid question, but what's the difference really? Other than paying for services (I guess?)

I'm looking at buying a new car, but it's almost out of motor plan. I could extend it, which is quite pricey, or extend the warranty, which is what the dealer recommended. What's the best option? Or nothing at all?

Motorplan: - Pretty much covers everything except for Fuel and Tires, and is much more comprehensive. For example, if your Diff packs up, you dont need to pay a dime, everything is covered.

Warranty: Has maximum payouts for each part, so you are likely to pay a portion of the cost, should something break. Good real life example. My GF's Diff on her Land Rover recently broke. Warranty paid R22k, she had to pay R3500.

What tman said.

If you plan on modding, motorplan (and probably most warranties) are pretty useless. If you plan on keeping it as is, then motorplan is awesome!

Nah. No plans to mod at this stage, other than maybe a few small superficial things.
I'll check out the price difference, maybe I'll opt for just warranty. By the sounds of it, it's like 24k for a year of motor plan :blueCry:

get a service plan - will cover you for services - as per dealer schedule - including brakes - wipers and battery. then get a separate warranty for mechanically breakdown- unlimited benefit as your car is still under MP . both should set you back around R30k for the 3yr/60000km.

albeit - depending if you vehicle is still financed and who is the finance house the amounts may differ.

You can also try other companies like Motorite for a maintenance plan. They MAY work out cheaper than BMW.

A bit off topic, apologies, but do you know any 'mod friendly' warranties?

I haven't found any, but I'm not really a fan of warranties, I go through cars too quickly lol.

I rather buy a slightly older car, that I know I can afford (incl. breakages), do some upgrades and enjoy every moment of the journey!

Sorry. Forgot to add, if the mplan is close to expiry, then the options are 1. Extend mplan (safest route but can be expensive if milage must be extended, not too bad adding time), 2. Look for warranty, lots of options, I personally think BMW’s warranty is quite good, espesially the one you get while your car is still under mplan but close to expiry, 3. Bite the bullet and do maintenance yourselve. This depends from car to car obviously.

I've always renewed motor plan as its the safest, easiest way to protect your car from any unforeseen issues.

BMW needs to up their Motorplan extensions.
Audi are at 15 years and Porsche at 12 years. BMW still keeping it at 7 years🤷‍♂️

While BMW do offer unique "maintenance plan" extensions, these are not the same as "Motorplan", since it covers only servicing and brakes.

Might be an indicator of (1) that Audi and Porsche can rely on the entire VAG group. Most extensions are going to be macans and cayennes which share parts with multiple other VAG cars (especially macans!) - thus they're probably producing tons of cars. And (2) BMWs are likely less reliable too :/

On (2), I would say a 20d/30d is the exception:) Nothing from VAG can compete with the d for reliability;)
