Mo, any updates on this fine example? Last we know it was towed away.

:withStu:

Hate to hear of these cars being sick :(

Will update as soon as there is some progress. Busy with Giz at the moment who was ordering/getting OEM engine parts.

Engine parts :fencelook:

Yeah - valve cover gasket was not done properly and all associated bolts/washers looked "aftermarket". Car also seemed to be burning oil. Coolant was almost boiling as well after a few mins, so decided to take a step back and strip, re-do everything again with OEM parts. Check block, head, cooling system, etc.

That's the reason I played it conservative with the flatbed instead of driving further and risking damage.

Oh man that's not cool. Were you aware of all this when you bought it?

Nope - but settled issues with the seller once discovered.

As you guys are aware, Mo sent me his newly purchased 530i for some TLC.

The culprit of the steam hissing out the car, a broken bleed screw.

With the bleed screw replaced and the engine running fine, it was time for an oil change. The oil was disgusting! It drained out with the consistency of water and had lost all its lubricating properties.

Old filter had become brittle, new oem replacement went in, along with Liqui Moly Toptech 4100 5w40 motor oil.

Old air filter had gotten wet at some stage as you can see. Replaced with oem replacement.

A new sump gasket will be installed on the next service.

Due to this car been lowered, all the underpanels are trashed from speedbumps.

So much that someone tried a fibreglass patch job.

Front shocks are in desperate need of replacement as their fluids leaked out years ago.

Rear shocks haven't leaked but they will be replaced with the fronts on the next visit.

All the tyres need replacement which Mo will do next week.

The tappet cover needed replacement as it was warped and damaged from a previous mechanic years ago. CT mechanic thought adding some extra washers to the bolts would cure the oil leak issue, it didn't.

After removing the old tappet cover I was greeted by this:

The oil was so old it had turned to varnish and stained the engine internals black.

New OEM tappet cover with new gasket and 15 bolt grommets.

Bolts and washers spent 24hrs in engine degreaser.

New cover in place.

At the same time I replaced the spark plugs and bought a OEM fuel filter.

All back together. No more smoke from oil dripping onto the hot exhaust manifolds.

Old fuel filter was a KS unit so at least it had been changed in its life.

New OEM filter installed and engraved with the date and mileage.

Replaced this hose as it leaked upon testing the new filter.

Did a repair job to the low hanging undercovers by adding a few extra fastening screws.

Brake fluid flush was next.

The fluid that came out. :(

While refitting the wheels I noticed the right front had lost its pressure as the rubber valve was very old and had perished.

Took it past TWT and had a new valve fitted as the spare can't be trusted.

Next I tackled the driver's door lock actuator, it was missing and the cover was broken so its a good thing Mo ordered some replacement units.

Only way to fit it is to removed the whole unit.

Back right door also had actuator issues, this time from not being installed correctly, replaced that one with a new one also.

Finished off by resetting the airbag light as CT mechanic had unplugged the driver's door airbag without disconnecting the battery. I did a diagnostic and cleared fault codes. Only fault after clearing is the AUC sensor, no big deal.

Yay, no more airbag light!

Thats all for now, Mo will bring the car back in the new year where we will give the car a suspension overhaul.

Awesome work, I always like reading your threads on the work done. :=): Those underpanels look rough indeed.

Nice work gizmo!

I also replaced my door actuator a while back, but don't remember having to remove the complete unit. Might save you a few mins next time.

And +1 on the undercarriage plastics. Most of msport models I have come across are broken and hanging.

It's good to see these old ladies getting some tlc.

I tried fitting the driver's door actuator with the latch mechanism in place, I wasn't having luck and didn't want to break it any more than the previous person did so it was safer to remove it and do it properly.

Thank you Warren for the great work on this car :clapper: And thank you for putting up with my OCD :hammerhead:

Next stop in the coming days will be Shaheen at TheWheelShop to get some new tekkies. Still in 2 minds what to do about the wheels. Unless Shaheen has something really, really close to 18" OEM's, will keep the 17s and probably get them refurb'ed properly. However, need them to strip all 4 tyres off the rims and check them properly before making a call on this.

Next phase in Jan/Feb will be new shocks when they arrive and other related suspension bits, depending on condition. I want the ride as "OEM"/stock as possible.

At the next oil service, the list of other items identified already (Sump gasket, etc). Hopefully the decent LM oil starts clearing up some of the sludge gradually.

Will leave cosmetics (damaged rear bumper, botched repair on front bumper) for mid 2017. Decided to get all the mechanicals and neglected service/wear and team items done properly first.

Undecided on gearbox. At a lower age/mileage car, I would normally do a preventative oil change. But at 14 years and 166K KM old, I might cause issues. In any case, need to drive the car for a few weeks to get a feel for the box and decide. Maybe this is one of those items you just leave until it breaks and do a proper rebuild.
