Quick wash before M Fest...

Can't believe that I will have clocked 3 years with the F90 quite soon. I think a plan extension to take me into 2026 is on the cards. 55000km on the clock. I think some mid-life refreshes like the LCI tails and carbon mirror caps are in order soon.

I have actually been holding off on the tails because there are two options: PnP from Firi that may or may not play nicely with motorplan (but nobody is gonna fiddle with my wiring) or the kit from BMW which is not far off price wise, but you have to trust the tech to run a couple more wires to control units and hope they get it right :ROFLMAO:. Ironically the former option is more attractive despite an OEM retrofit being available :ROFLMAO:

Not much F90 news to report on. Nearly time for the holiday check, but since replacing the water bottle it has been fine

In terms of garage updates there are a few cosmetic changes and addition of two JBL EON 715s (My Black Friday purchases LOL). If you think cold start puts you at risk of eviction, you should hear these LOL. Need to sort out a mounting solution.

Also planning to do Hex lights but business and looming school fees has not allowed for this just yet.

I spoke too soon about not having many updates - G90 Badge arrived earlier than anticipated

I had been meaning to change this for an OEM black badge (comp badge) at least but when I saw the G90 badge, I liked it alot and felt this was going to work for me:

December is not the time of year to visit Durban, but we still ended up making a trip (albeit only for 3 days).

JUST BEFORE leaving, OF COURSE I had to have a tyre related issue (since I mentioned only really having these in another thread :ROFLMAO: ). The cut wasn't as bad as it looks in the pic... so patched it and off we went. I am changing to P Zero Corsas early next year so these were going to be changed anyway (and you all thought I was going to be a Michelin fanboy forever... :ROFLMAO: ). I don't feel as bad about it as I would for a newer/recently fitted tyre

IMG_5048.JPEG

I also only just noticed that there is an M5 imprint on the under-bonnet pad during pre-flight checks :ROFLMAO: (Useless info)

I spotted a G90 near La Mercy/Umdloti and had a brief photo op.

IMG_5085_jpg.jpg

Trip down
We had to detour along the R103 (I think) for 100 agonising kilometres because of an accident on the main route. This was initially supposed to be a 10km detour when we set off but was 'upgraded' when a truck also had an issue as things went on. This was an absolutely wild ride as people were overtaking very carelessly and there were times where you had a car overtaking when it had no business to and you also had a car-destroying pothole or series of potholes that you need to aggressively avoid. On top of that there were a couple of cars that caught air overtaking and catching an undulation on the other side. Definitely don't want to do that route again.

General
Overall assessment of the roads is that KZN is slowly rotting away. There are so many absolutely abysmal patches that it makes JHB roads feel like Cape Town. You can randomly have a fairly serious dip or crest in an otherwise fairly flat section of road because of these shoddy repairs. Construction seems to take forever and somehow it ends up being worse after completion. Sections of road that were redone last year that I drove on are again in disrepair a year later. PMB hates the car (as I always say) and the road is almost unbearable to drive with the resonance it generates in the cabin and then a section that makes it sound like you have a flat tyre for a few km. The cops are the worst in KZN by a LONG way and there is perpetual construction.

If I can help it, I won't be doing another trip to Durban during a mass-holiday or year end.

Trip up
On the N3 coming back there were cops EVERYWHERE - if Google or Waze is telling you they are up ahead, they probably are... sometimes only a few km apart. Not sure if the average speed cams were working or not... I don't think I got caught but it is very annoying and there are way too many sections that are a full 40km/h slower than they are supposed to be for the kind of roads and traffic that they carry. Many of the fixed cams appear to have had their lenses shot or otherwise damaged.

It was a much more pleasant overall trip back home apart from some showers along the way and aforementioned cops. My wife had some fun in the driver's seat (a bit too much fun at times... especially launching out of toll gates with cops waiting on the other end :ROFLMAO:) Average consumption for the trip end to end including detours and running around was 10.5L/100km.

I thought I would get to 60000km this trip, but there is still some way yet to go for that.

IMG_5151_jpg.jpg

Apart from that little niggle with the tyre no issues and she is back home. Even on the M5, being in Durban with the coastal air makes a difference to the car... Cape Town must brace for another semigrant at some point :ROFLMAO:

F90 remains a very competent family car that eats up miles, as the F10 was before her.

I agree those wheels are good. Do they have a F8x M4 fitment available? What brand is it

They are OEM forged M Performance style 863M. They’re manufactured by Rimstock UK (Team Dynamics)

The style 963M is available for g80 5x112 offsets and centre lock so I guess if the offsets work you could do the centre lock conversion and still have them.

After nearly 11 years, I have switched from Michelin PSS/PS4S to P Zero Corsas. I don't do a lot of mileage with any of the cars and the Michelins do age-out/degrade over time. As I posted above, I had to plug the other rear tyre for my trip (one already had a plug) and this whole tyre situation was occupying a bit too much of my capacity for irritation.

There is no lack of traction from Michelins or issues with the F90 AWD system. This is just me satisfying my curiosity and being a little different. This is not a tyre anyone daily driving or doing significant regular mileage should buy. I also end up recommending Michelins (as does most of the internet) and my actual long term experience with most other brands is out of date especially with recent releases and updates to existing ranges. Pirelli has apparently also addressed a lot of the criticisms (as has Conti, Goodyear, Bridgestone...) and have had updates on their fresher stock that address the issue of quicker age-related degradation in performance that caused so much of their bad reputation on the 'regular' lines.

These are the standard on the F90 CS and thus are available from BMW for any F90 VIN (and of course @deago.parts@abmbmw worked out an no-brainer price for me!). Unfortunately they couldn't fit for me as they were still on skeleton staff still, but I had them fitted at Kyalami Supa Quick.

Believe it or not, I probably won't have any Michelin shod cars in my garage in a month or two when I swap out the PSC2 on my Alfa for the new Potenza Race. Porsche has Bridgestone on it as well.

I love how they look and, so far, they feel good - very early days: I was expecting a noisier tyre, but these seem to be exactly the same as the PS4S (so far anyway - will report back).

They have a rounder shoulder than the PS4S and a much more exaggerated rim guard creating the impression that they are a lower profile than they really are.

Treadwear ratings differ between manufacturers as they can under-report on this. The "Pirelli 80" is closer to a "Michelin 180" but they aren't really comparable, and these should yield a bit more mileage vs something like a Pilot Sport Cup 2. Theoretically it sits in between a Cup 2 and a Pilot Sport 4S and is in the camp of a "road tyre that can do the track". The P Zero Trofeos are the Pirelli "Track Tyres that can do the road".

Michelin PSC2R and Pirelli Trofeo R are the actual "track tyres" where you can't really do wet or poor road conditions.

It was time for a service and brake fluid was on the menu. I had BMW do a thorough inspection of my front suspension. I felt a little bit of a vibration when braking at low speeds. They checked the torque of some of the front suspension bolts (or something to that effect) which seems to have done the trick. This might have been something that was present with the PS4S but I started to notice because of the Corsas being a little more 'direct' or because I was just paying more attention with the change.

Booking with the app was seamless this time. I experienced issues the last time but seems to be ironed out.
Isaac was my service advisor and did a good job keeping me updated and moving me around.

Despite being now an old car and prior gen, the F90 still attracts a lot of attention :), particularly with the few little touches that make it a bit different.

I have a few loose ends to tie up with the Alfa and then will finally do the long awaited CS diffuser and LCI tails (prior to mid-year).

If you haven't already, take a look at some of the Instagram/YT stuff I've posted. Any feedback/comments/suggestions appreciated (Links in Sig). I am not looking to grow a channel or audience but rather have the content we repeat most often here in a different format if some people might find it more useful. It's been a rough end to 2024 and slow start to 2025 so I started to do this in the down time (or rather the 'hurry-up-and-wait' time :ROFLMAO:) that arises from time to time.

Informative video (YT) Llew. You covered a lot in a short time. Each topic could be its own video with some antidotes thrown in (yes, I am asking for these 😂).

So my M5 was back in briefly for a low coolant warning and an ever so slightly erratic idle (no errors/codes or smells or obvious leaks when I had checked and I had been monitoring this given @swazi85 had a second incident with his expansion tank). There was a leak identified on the turbo return line on Bank 1.

First the easy one: This is the line:

Bank 1 Coolant Line.png

It's part #4 in this diagram and isn't too expensive - Seems to be a R1500ish part but of course there is the vacuum filling of the cooling system and the labour that goes with it. While the cooling system addresses some of the F10 issues (it was a regular pain having to deal with the coolant hose leaks), this is still not an ideal setup. That said it has lasted 6 years as opposed to 6 months so I can live with that LOL.

1742480208468.png

Second the more complicated bit:

They did an overnight pressure test and also identified a leak on (surprise surprise) the expansion tank as well. This was not as big or dramatic as the last one where the seam had clearly given way. This tank was previously replaced but it seems it may not have been the new part # after all. I don't think BMW really had a full game plan for this when my tank was originally done (or when most F9x owners would have had the first tank done) and hence injectors were cleaned but not replaced. This was well before the official technical bulletin was released on the expansion tank issue. Whatever the reason it has a second new expansion tank with the confirmed new part number now.

It seems from the technician's notes that they stripped the bank of injectors, coils and plugs to inspect, including using a borescope, took photos and sent it off to BMW. They replaced all 4 injectors on Bank 2 (the side of the expansion tank). I am not sure if there is a new version of the injectors, and they do this to keep them matched on the bank or whether this is being done proactively to avoid issues down the line where they have found contamination of the injector/s with coolant. Anyway just relaying that this was the instruction from BMW and what was done.

It could be the effect of not having the car for the past 3 days, but I do think it feels a bit perkier than before. It's actually quite difficult to tell whether a car is a bit lower on power when being 10% down means it is still making 400ish kw. First world problems 🤦‍♂️

One could expect to pay R54000 for the whole exercise out of plan at non-motorplan/non discounted rates, but of course the big cost on this is the new injectors followed by the labour. I will still be doing the aluminium expansion tank when the car is eventually off plan in April next year and I will continue to monitor this.

I am counting this towards the plan extensions having paid for themselves a couple of times over already with a year still to go. It remains an absolute no-brainer to take the plan extensions on any M car while they are available. I still live in hope of them having a change of heart and allowing 8/9/10 year extensions like Audi does before my F90 plan expires :ROFLMAO:

Will continue to monitor and report back.

Crazy how bmw don’t do a proper fix of the coolant tank. My still has a few years left of motorplan, so going to get the aftermarket drip tray. Apparently shouldn’t affect my motorplan, better than the injectors constantly getting hammered.
