So thanks to you i ended up buying a Cayenne V6 diesel that is not as poverty as one would think for the basically base Cayenne. Wanted to get a VR6 model but this was so cheap i could not pass it up. Already have a buyer for it for a little profit

Airsuspension
Nav
Bose
Sunroof
Steering controls
Little privacy shades
Other stuff i will figure out when i collect it, but will need a spare key for it.

V6 diesel > VR6. They're worth quite a bit more too.

But VR6 noises..... i want the sweet sweet noises form a VR6, but 50k price delta in favour of a much better equipped Diesel (with a bit more millage) swung the vote.

Did a trip to Champagne Sports. If the weather was better I wouldn't be posting just yet, but here we are LOL

Roads were quite poor and of course got progressively worse as we got closer to the resort. There are now occasionally potholes on the actual N3. There are still sections of road that you really shouldn't be doing in anything low, but if you're careful you will make it. There are car-destroying potholes throughout the route, most of which the local government seems to have helpfully marked with yellow paint rather than repairing or resurfacing the roads :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: With the volume of rain we had on this trip, there were sections with cars slipping and sliding trying to get up mud/gravel sections (we had to leave the N3 sooner than usual because of crashes)

There were a couple of weather related crashes as well as one that seemed to be the result of sheer stupidity (Truck went over the bonnet of a small crossover but folks seemed to be ok)

The Porsche/Touareg itself performed very well. While it is no M5 in the power department, it didn't struggle to overtake and was generally very comfortable and capable - especially for something so old.

The Pioneer wireless carplay unit was definitely appreciated and a mild sound upgrade is coming soon. I wanted to get a system professionally installed but DIY is the way to go for me on this one, since people seem to quote as though they are doing sound in a brand new 3 bar Porsche :ROFLMAO: Thiren and Neven have both sent me down some interesting rabbit holes with their insights from their own projects.

More to come soon

Damn, I’m planning a trip to Champagne with the kids later this month and was going to take the M3….I guess that’s out of the question based on your recent experience 🙈

These 2 threads are making me look at a GTS at WBC...
In all honestly i think it is the wrong direction. One is drawn to sporty looking things, but well then you start sitting with a SUV that has all the limitations of a car when it comes to shitty roads.

Just a note that there is a very good reason the VR6 is often higher priced for like for like spec. The V8s have substantially higher maintenance costs, and some repairs that are engine out. The diesels have one or two high value repairs as well. The VR6 models are only really affected by the one platform issue of the prop shaft centre bearing.

that said the GTS is still capable off road if it is not kitted out with 21s/22s and the tupperware. Doesn’t matter if you’re never going to use it off road or for trips to dodgy places I guess. After this recent trip, I doubt I’ll change out for much lower profile rubber or bigger rims

You better have double the value of the car ready to fix it WHEN it starts going bad.

I know, right?!

Eish, I live on a farm and got a E90 with M Sport which I feel is too high already.

Must have grown up on different kinds of farms then.

Eitherway one buys what one loves, i would love a GTS, but there are issues there that i simply don't have the appetite for. VR6 is still what i would ideally like, but decent kit in them is hard to find.

Back and washed

I used a new Mother's product on the tyres which got most of the mud out of them quite nicely with minimal effort (I was waiting for stock of the Gyeon goodies I normally use). I may switch to this as my regular tyre product (and use Gyeon wheel cleaner for the rim itself). There was still alot left in the tyres after pressure washing and using Nasiol wash & a brush

I am about to find out how much brake pads cost since I got the pad warning. Will report back.

Look, if you are careful then you can definitely make it there and drive around. The challenge is that there are sections where you have to basically use the oncoming lane quite regularly to avoid clusters of potholes. There were even a few potholes on the N3 itself both to and from the 'berg, which I've never seen in 20+ years of driving those roads.

While you CAN avoid the potholes, if you do accidentally hit them, many of them are VERY deep... as in not just destroying a rim or tyre: it's damaging/bending your shock tower if you hit it hard enough. I'd say just be extra careful if you do go with your car- especially if there is mist/fog in sections and you can't see very far ahead to plan your dodges.

There is a section that is an 'official' contraflow because the sinkhole has not been fixed (must be a couple of years that it's been this way now) and the section in my pics above which is muddy/sandy/stony and also built up a huge pool of water with the rain and resulted in yet another section where people had to create their own 'gentleman's-agreement contraflow'... not great (it's also been this way for several years now).

These are epic machines!! Currently have an ‘09 Diesel on air and ‘08 3.6 on springs.
@Llew pads are the same as the Touareg of same year, did this recently on my ‘08 Cayenne, did discs as well, discs for the front set was R4.5K and pads were R2K for front set.
Imported a Eurowise 2” lift kit for air on the diesel with 1/2 inch subframe drop and also a 40mm lift kit for the 3.6. Also put some A/T tyres on them. When I have a chance should start a thread on the two, black 3.6 is almost done just looking for one or two trim covers.

@TurboLlew, which exit did you take from the N3? I went to Champagne Sports in 2023, took exit 179 from Dbn and drove via Loskop to the resort. Roads were not too bad, even at 2:30am. I'll be heading that way in July, hopefully the roads on that route haven't deteriorated all that much.

In the meantime, we'll be waiting for that E3 Cayenne announcement...

My FIL had a MUCH better time coming from Durban than we did coming from the JHB side (y)

is the 3.6 the version that the guys are referring to as the "VR6" ?

I am not too versed on the Porsche slang.

Thanks I did an interesting exercise pricing the OEM brake job. The price difference is eye watering. I decided to go with a sort of mid-range option (Hella/Pagid) and do front + rear just so I know I won't need to worry about brakes again for a while.

The worst comment I've seen about them talks about them wearing a little bit faster than OEM. For the price delta (basically all parts supplied and fitted for the same price as one front OEM rotor and wear sensor), I can live with it. I wouldn't hesitate to spend money on the 4C or M5 but for the Cayenne it makes no sense to be spending a significant % of the value of the vehicle on this.

On another note, I have too many bills at present :ROFLMAO:
