Interesting info about oil drain intervals

Hello Guys

Its my pleasure to try and help.

Before i changed my oil at about 194 000km, my lifters got a little noisy (They weren't noisy before this), car is now at 211 948km and due for another oil change. Now whenever i start the car up in the morning i get lifter noise until it warms up.
I'm running Castrol High mileage 20w-50. Would a change in oil, mabe a different weight, cure this problem?

Alright there are two real main causes for this.

1. Worn Hydraulic Lifters
2. Old Oil

What you are getting seems to be related more to the oil than the lifters itself. Your oil is old and this often affects the seals on the lifters which in turn makes the lifters make a noise. Hence when you change the oil to a fresh oil that hasnt thinned or deteriorated the sound vanishes. The cause for it making a noise when the engine is cold is because parts have not heated and therefore no expansion etc has occured. Throw in some oldish and possible thinned oil and bingo. You get your noise.

Interestingly enough... The recommended ambient temperature for the oil you are currently using is 20 degrees. Perhaps that is contributing since the weather is colder? :thinker:

If you dont want the sound at all you can also use our Hydraulic Lifter Additive. Its a lubricant you add to the oil and it stops the noise and lubricates the lifters. It is a fantastic product and we have used it on a variety of cars. It costs about R50 if I remember correctly.... Will confirm this though. Would you be interested in something like this?

Hi Mike and welcome! Thanks for all the fantastic data! Like I said in my post, I did some research and your post just confirms what I have been trying to find out! I would love to use the oil you suggested to HellasNC. Could you please let me know where I could find Liqui Moly 5W-30 SM in Port Elizabeth? I drive a 320 diesel. I have thus far been using the Shell Diesel Synthetic, as prescribed for use in the VW and Audi "pume dusse" diesels. I applied my own logic to use this oil, as it has an extremely high specification and is not even sold anywhere, except from VW/Audi parts departments. The specifictaion on the oil is: Shell Helix Diesel HX7 AV, 5W-30. API SL/CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4. Would you reckon that is a good alternative to your Liqui Moly?

The oil you are using is capable as you will have noticed of lubricating the engine of your vehicle. I just want to point out that it is a SL spec which means it is older technology. But it is a CF spec which means that yes. For use in Diesel it is top of the range. It also has no VW approvals (I couldnt find anything on google...) so lets hope nothing goes wrong with your BMW :mmm:

What I can recommend:

- Liqui Moly Top Tec 4100
- Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200
- Liqui Moly Longtime High Tech

All the above oils are CF specced and are approved by BMW for Longlife use. I would recommend the Liqui Moly Longtime High Tech as it was specifically designed for long life performance.

Data Sheets for your perusal:

http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/...file/1136 Longtime High Tech SAE 5W-30_EN.pdf

http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/...ec 4200_EN.pdf/$file/3706 Top Tec 4200_EN.pdf

http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/...ec 4100_EN.pdf/$file/3700 top tec 4100_EN.pdf

I am at home at the moment (In the middle of a farm actually on a 3G card  ) so I cant supply you with any prices... But will do tomorrow.

We have a store in Port Elizabeth as far as I remember. I will call JHB tomorrow and get a number for you. Alternatively you can buy it directly from us but there will be a posyafe fee of about R100 or so... But thats with overnight courier.

Will post that number up for you tomorrow.

Just another minor issue for discussion

What process do you all use for changing the oil in your BMW's?

This is from the E30 Owners Manual.

I presume I should stay with W20-50 in my E30??

Hello Nicholas

Just checked my email. Our technician in Germany (The mad scientist that creates these oils) has suggested you use our Top Tec 4100 5W30.

I trust his recommendation and the choice is up to you. The Top Tec 4100 is a Synthetic Oil which is why it can handle the extra stress and still provide the best protection. 20W50 oils are usually mineral oils hence why they need to be thicker. Your handbook calls for all the oils there and if our technician says a 5W30 will work then it will.

Oh and you can also expect a performance gain of approximately 2kw courtesy of the thinner oil :dropjaw::spit:

** BTW the Top Tec will be more expensive than your current oil because its Synthetic **

Mike

A quick question...?

The Cera Tec I mentioned earlier is rather expensive but has a huge amount of benefits. If you guys like I can set up a group buy?

Maybe if we can get 10 people to buy I can arrange for a discount for you guys?

Here is a Data Sheet: http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/medie...Tec_EN.pdf

Price at the moment: R234.86 (Expensive but worth it considering the benefits it offers)

Would you guys like to arrange a group buy?

This is awkward as I dont really like BMW because of the FAIL of a BM we had. Unless its a 135i or a M5 Chelsea Tractor. :)

I would be very interested in that lifter additive. If the noise goes away for R50, then i'll be extremely happy. How do i go about getting this from you?

You can purchase it directly from us: http://www.sosoil.co.za/shop-more.php?pid=114

There is a delivery charge. But depending on where you are based I may be able to do delivery for free. We have sold this to various service centres and it is highly effective.

Our company is based in Cape Town and we are in Observatory. We also have an online store with over 95 products (Still adding products though) and you can purchase from there too. The link is in my signature.

What process are you guys using when changing your oil?

I get an error when I go to the Contact section on your website.

I like to drain the oil while there is still a little heat left. It makes the drain faster and I think more of the old oil comes out. Replace oil filter and then put new oil in.

Is there any specific way to drain oil??

The way you are draining is perfectly fine. Might I suggest you use an engine flush though?

The reason for this is because when you drain your oil you remove the old oil but the soot and contaminants such as lacquer deposits and ash remain in the engine. This means that when you put the fresh oil in you will simply contaminate it.

Have you ever put clean oil in and then 10km checked it and noticed its black? Thats from the deposits etc.

An engine flush takes only 10 minutes to use and removes these contaminants and deposits so your oil is fresher for longer and is able to work more effectively.

Before: (This is how a normal engine looks when an oil change is needed)

After using an engine flush:

See why I recommend it? :dropjaw:

What year is your Polo?
