Non BMW content this time, but as you guys know by now, when I go shopping for x, I often end up buying y. In my hunt for an E36 M3 or suitable project, I came across this Beetle and it just felt like I needed to buy it. It was worth the drive out to go and have a look - original paint, motor, interior (for the most part), very few little imperfections from the many years on the road and very limited rust (just surface rust which I will probably treat and keep for the look.

I have never owned a VW before, but always liked the Beetle (my Grandfather once owned a similar one). I don't know whether I will keep her long term but let's see.

There is enough work required to keep me happy as a little project bringing back some of the paint, a little upholstery and a few refreshes here and there.

Hopefully it will be an interesting addition to the garage

Great stuff

I owned a black 1968 Beetle for about 3 years

Many trips to VolksSpares in Jet Park, for bits and bobs

Was a nice little project car, and a joy to be seen driving it
But
I needed a reliable "daily" which it unfortunately wasn't
So it was "traded-in" for an E32-728i

Cool buy!

If you looking for contacts in the VW fraternity, let me know. My brother is big into the classic scene and has himself a split screen Samba bus.
Coolest of cars!

VW's is where i started my car journey.

Im currently busy with my 1975 Passat LS Coupe ( Project for the last 5years )

But for my Mk1 2 doors, i got all my parts off from VWHeritage.com.

Regrettably, they do not have parts for my "Dasher" :blueCry:

Llew, how did you go from Dakar E36 M3 to a yellow Beetle? Were you inspired by the Bumble Bee movie.... Just Kidding!

Love these cars and the best part of them is that you can be 110% hands on with them, as they were designed to be simple and straight forward to work on!

Bumblebee? :)

I really liked these cars , they have so much character , The only gripe i have with them is that they are sooo noisy , i just cant look past that annoying engine noise .

Hi Llew

Any updates on this projects... I'm a year into a 70' restoration, and it never ends...

I actually missed your post asking!

I've done a few things: It is a struggle to find proper restoration parts or to even plan for this well during COVID. When I do have all I need I will look at doing it 'properly'. I did a refresh on the motor at Vdubtech since it was coming apart to do pushrod tube leaks anyway. There were various things done at the time, including rings, rear main seal, entire (brazil) factory seal kit done on the whole motor, a few cosmetic things... As a result I can park it in the garage and (almost) be guaranteed not to find oil on the floor LOL.

Part of this was converting to G-Tech electronic ignition which doesn't look too intrusive in the bay

I did a full brake job on the car (fluids, seals, shoes etc) but will do a disc brake conversion as a separate project at some point.... Of course, wheel bearings, greasing axles, gearbox oil etc was also done at the time.

I treated the car to some new Falken rubber since the old tyres were ancient:

I had the drivers seat reupholstered (I know it doesn't quite match, but it is a stepping stone to getting the full interior done properly and I have a set of old seats with headrests - still deciding on whether to use them or not)

Either way a fun little car that you might have a use for a handful of times in a year but which puts a smile on your face every time. The kids love it - but it has had much less use in Summer so far LOL
