Stompie's 120d

I know this might sound abit weird but if you drive 130kmph which is about 2300rpms...you will get about 21 to 23kms to the litre... Did it last night from langebaan to durban... One and a haaaaaalf tank of fuel... For 1700kms

Holy hell that's a distance and a half :fencelook:

I don't think he will get the same fuel consumption though, even is everything else is the same, gearbox, diff, wheels etc. the hatch just isn't as aero as the coupe (I assume you have the coupe because of your profile image)

Anyway this pure speculation, the differences in altitude, and driver behavior might more be the reason than anything else

(tips 2c into jar)*

Stompie, i am buying my daugter in law's 2005 120d manual and it seems her car is doing the same thing. We checked the wheel sensors, etc. This started after i did the brake fluid flush with my pressure bleeder. Also remember now that she had a slight fender bender when a guy dislocated a corner of the back bumper. I actually hooked the corner back on and the damage was minimal. She did have it repaired by the insurance. Am wondering now if the battery did not take a knock with the panelbeaters maybel leaving something on and draining the battery. Was going to do a new brake fluid flush and if the problem persists will be doing the DSC with INPA. Will also have the alternator checked by auto electrician. Could you please describe the symptoms in detail if you feel like it? Thanks. (My daughter in law says the car would cut out with the DSC light and some other lights coming on and would nearly die then come back and she can drive normally again. When i get the car i will be able to give more detail.)

I would get the alternator checked at a Auto electrician, they took 2 min and told me the alternator is surging.

So symptoms were:

Randomly while driving the rev counter and speedo would drop down to zero and then the car would lose power for a split second and the rev/speedo would go back up. As this happens, the DSC light comes one, yellow triangle with exclamation mark, Tyre indicator, Handbrake light all would come up but car does not seem to lose power. Usually once restarted, the errors would be gone but the week before i took the car in, it started happening daily and would lose power, the car one day battled to idle, and the wipers would go on and i could not turn them off. Indicators did not work ect.

So yeah have your battery tested as well as the alternator but my bet is on the alternator regulator busy starting to fail on yours it seems.

I had these symptoms over 2 years perhaps once every week or 2nd week and over the past two months it started happening more frequently.

Now i have not had any issues since the alternator was overhauled which costed R3500 using original valeo regulator, new bearings, and all the other things that usually wear.

Thanks a lot for the speedy response. From what i can gather it sounds much the same as what is currently happening with "our" car. Will have a better idea when i drive the car. Hope to fetch it on Saturday.

So Stompie, car gave no problems untill yesterday when i went to Cape Town. On my return it started losing power slightly but speedo needle would drop to zero for about a second or two, the radio would go silent and triangle on dash would appear. Stopped at a auto electrician in Durbanville and she put her voltmeter on the battery. Would charge steadily at about 14,2 volts and then drop to 12,3 volts for a second or two and return to 14,2. No fans were on at the time. Drove back home (about 100kms) and no problem. Drove straight to my auto electrician but he was busy so spoke to him about my problem while he was working. He mentioned a guy in Wellington that works on clusters, ecu's, etc., so i gave him a call and he also suggested the alternator was the culprit. Got me a price for a new Valeo for R3900 which i have paid and should be available by Wednesday. I have already removed the alternator from my car.

Hope you come right and that the alternator is the issue bud! I was also able to get a new Valeo for R3500 with warranty but the car was already in so i would have had to pay double labour ect so would have ended up costing me around R4500 so just had them refurb mine complete and hasnt acted up once since fixed so im happy.

Nice colour and nice car!

Thank you bud! I seriously just need to get her properly detailed cause this color shows each and every scratch small and big!

Hopefully i can do the yearly oil service this weekend and would like to properly redo the wheels in the same Charcoal plastidip again. It held up really good for a year and some months and i personally like the look of the charcoal. I wont go the matt black route.

So, the alternator that the guy sold me as a new Valeo turned out to be a aftermarket alternator with no markings on it. Seller claims it was made in the Netherlands, of all places. Did not know that they made car parts! Anyway, had already transferred the money for the alternator so i took it and put it on the car. Working fine as far as i can determine. No surges, no funny lights or anything making me think that the car is fine for now. Also took the old rectifier off the old Valeo alternator to Bosch and they sold me a new rectifier (also non Valeo) which i put on the old alternator and keeping that as spare. Also retrofitted cruise control which came from a E90 that Boytjie on the Forum was stripping. Had some lights come on on the dash after fitting the cc but with the generous help from guys on the Forum i got the lights cancelled and everything is fine now. Really enjoying the car. The black colour is difficult to keep clean but nice to look at when washed. Not a great fan of the grey interior but it is not too bad. Hope to take a long trip with it in March to see if i can break the magic 20km/l barrier!!

Small update, did the yearly oil service, replaced the rear brake pads and sensor, reset all services and then bought some new metallic charcole rustoleum and redid each wheel properly.

Previously i sprayed them while on the car and did a shitty job, came out much better this time.

Used a deck of cards and sprayed several coats and they are all brand new and smooth finish so im happy.

No more service lights, handbrake light so now just to sort out the leaking windscreen bottle.

While washing the car, as i sprayed the windshield with the pressure washer, the screen cracked!!!! FML! Never tought that could happen but obviously the heat and sudden cold water and bam cracked so will put in an insurance claim soon....

So are pics of the oil service i did and then Saturday i removed the intercooler, charge pipe, boost pipes and gave everything a proper clean as i suspect the one pipe is leaking. Recently it seemed as if i can hear a blowing noise and almost like the spooling was louder but after cleaning everything it all seems way better, car is boosting properly again with much more torque it seems.

The Dampener pulley also still looks good it seems and there is no vibration ect.

All cleaned with some clean green and pressure washer. Could probably be much cleaner but its gonna get dirty again but all the oil is gone which is what i wanted to do.

Now i will drive the car for a month and then inspect to see if the cooler is leaking or if its the seal on the boost pipe and replace if required.

For some time i have also had this slight metallic rattle when revving the car and it was driving me insane. While fitting back the bottom splash plate, i saw that it has a heat shield for the exhaust and this was literally hanging on by one rivet so i fixed it by pop riveting it in place so no more rattle.

forgot to take a pic but its this part:

Its a thin aluminum shield with holes ect. It was all bent and i think it was touching the exhaust so that is all sorted now.

While all the piping was off, i checked the intake side on the turbo and there is no play side to side or in and out and still spins freely so still happy with that.

Next up i want to respray the calipers all round in this BMW Blue

Also planning on doing a gearbox oil change and plug seals cause it seems the bottom drain plug is leaking oil and the gears have become slightly more notchy over the past couple months so just scared that perhaps the oil level has dropped.

Any suggestions on oil to use and if Motul Gear 300 oil is fine? or what would be best.

This is a manual so i assume i should be fine to just replace the oil and that the mileage factor as with auto boxes isnt an issue here?

When i did the oil change on my ex Z4 about 18 months ago i phoned around and had to get a special oil for the gearbox and another for the diff. My advice is make sure which oil to get.
ratkas olie_1865599339.jpg
Ignore what i wrote on the bottle. I had some diff oil left over and poured it into the empty gearbox bottle to make it easier to fill the diff. The Fuchs oil is the one i used in the gearbox. The diff used a different type which i had to order.
