Rebadging of BMWs by BMWUSA

As some of you may know, the diesel initiative for US BMWs is well and truly under way, starting with the "328d" which will then be followed by an LCI "535d" later in the year.

Bimmerpost Article

So basically what the US will be getting is an F30 320d (135kW, 380NM), which has been renamed/rebadged as a 328d because (and this is my educated guess) it will be priced slightly higher than the 180kW, 350NM petrol equivalent 328i.

As to why it's going to be priced higher than the 328i, I don't know, it baffles me. Is this just a marketing ploy? Is the American market just full of badge snobbery which BMW is taking advantage of? Ofcourse the other factor in this is that diesel is more expensive in the US, but I still don't understand how that results in a diesel motor which has considerably less power than it's petrol equivalent being in the same price bracket. I don't see demand for diesels in the US being helped by this, all you would be doing is paying more for a diesel car which is more fuel efficient but will cost the same to run, if not more.

Bear in mind that the US was also previously offered the E90 335d which had the same power output as the LCI Euro 330d and was priced higher than the 335i. Safe to say, it was a bit of a flop...who in their right mind would forego a 335i to go for a 335d that's more expensive and costs the same (if not more) not run :flyfun: Americans are all about POWER and BIG ENGINES.

Would like to hear some Fanatic views on this, my logic may be skewed.

PS: the 535d they will be getting will just be a rebadged 530d, not the real 535d that the rest of us get.

MBUSA also rebadged the "E500/CLS500/S500" etc to "E550/CLS550/S550" so I guess BMW aren't the first.

Bigger is better there, they dont get golfs under 2litres. They also have some other editions of the golf which has a 2,5lire i think.

I guess they use the 328d badge so it looks a bit better. Because the car still performs. But I do see how it can be more expensive over there than the 328i if its cheaper over here.

Interesting. Maybe the 325d would have made more sense for the US.

Surprised the 328d doesn't have twin tailpipes, Americans won't be happy with one :fencelook:

The ironic part is that some of the American brand V8's produce even less power than a decent German 6 cylinder engine.

So maybe they'll just re-brand the 316i there to a 325i or something:fencelook:

the Americans arent as bad as the South Africans...

We just put a ///M badge on any model or any car, or if the car isnt powerful enough we remove the badge completely.

I dont think they will think its crap just because of the badge. Americans arent really big on diesels. Most petrol stations dont even have diesel. So I think they will be slightly surprised at how well it drives.

The ones who know about the diesel BMWs will most likely have had some sort of experience with the 35d models that were previously offered I'm guessing.

the F30 320d is awesome and i also dont think anyone who drives one should think its crap,

bear in mind if you look at BMW in northern america four cylinder BMW's are/where taboo as most BMW's in the states are 6cyl and up. So putting a 320 badge on an american BMW could produce a sense of "entry level/ el cheapo" in the american consumers mind hence the idea to re-badge it to a 328d as those were always a cyl model.

everything stated above is my opinion:fencelook:

Yeah but I mean it should effect your choice in the car. I mean before you buy a car surely you look at all the specs etc. like 0 - 100s etc etc. So they would know before they bought the car how it performed.

Most of the diesels in the states are in the huge bakkies and are mostly 6litres V8/10s.

They dont have a lot of diesel cars. My brother might have bought this car, he wanted the 335d but it was out of his price range so he "settled' for the E92 335i. But like you said its over priced. How much more expensive is the 328i than the d in South africa?
