My (hopefully not a project) Z4M

It all started early one fateful December morning in Camps Bay where I was woken up to go for a quick mountain drive. With the enjoyment of the previous nights' beer still heavy on my head, I stumbled out of bed. The fog quickly cleared when I was handed the keys to a neat E46 M3 and was directed in the direction of Chapmans peak drive. On that drive, I decided that, 1; I had to own a S54 car in my life, and 2; I need to move to the Cape.

Around the same time, a mate was looking at getting into a 2 door coupe/sports car for daily purposes. He, quite incorrectly, was looking at a Nissan 350Z/370Z, so, as a good friend, I took it upon myself to educate him and proceeded to convince him he needs a Z4 Coupe 3.0Si in manual. In my exceedingly convincing argument, I unintentionally managed to convince myself that I, indeed, was also in need of a Z4. The casual search for a Z4M started, I looked at one and posted a thread here to start educating myself, but was not in a financial position to afford one or had the garage real estate to park one.

Soon, a forum member posted this fantastically detailed for sale thread:

I innocently thought a quick look couldnt possibly hurt. I took the car for probably the longest test drive I've ever done and was immediately in love with the car! Avi was an absolute gent and was happy to keep the car for me while I figured out the logistics behind the purchase. Within 2 weeks, there was an alignment in the stars, the red M5 was paid for and it finally vacated its spot in the garage. 30min later I was at Avi's place and on my way home in my new pride and joy  I had several laugh out loud moments on my drive home! As James May says, there were a fizzing sensations...

There has been some previous history/interaction with this car:

My initial impressions are:
  • Car is exceptionally clean for its age, this is intentionally not a project car. For once in my life!
  • Eventuri intake is a musical instrument and invites illegal activities every time you go close to the loud pedal
  • Car can be clunky if you are not paying attention, but it rewards your considered inputs and encourages you to remain attentive
  • This is the easiest car Ive driven for heel and toe downshifts
  • The view over the never-ending bonnet is spectacular
  • The low seating position by the rear wheels makes you feel like you are in something much more exotic
  • The S54 is a well-documented peach when running well - much more torquey than I was expecting
  • The Vitour tyres on the car are hilariously rubbish, I shall punish them at the skidpan, but may just keep them on for now or change the tyres when/if I refurb the wheels
  • ZHP gearknob and associated shift action is excellent, although it doesnt light up at night
  • It fits in my overcrowded garage 👀
Things that need/want sorting:
  • My brain, there is nothing that needs sorting on this car
  • Repair/replace sunglasses holder as it doesnt stay clipped
  • I'd maybe like to wrap the door handle trims in a similar brushed aluminium as the dashboard
  • Find a set of leather covered sun visors (My mates 3.0si has leather covered upper door trims and visors, I thought the visors were awesome)
  • The wheel refurb, but they really are not that bad
  • Some paint touchups
  • Adjust the handbrake

Lol

Please phone around about that sunglasses holder at OEM pricing - iirc it was around R6500 (this is 7yrs ago or whenever I called). You could probably setup a nice little cottage industry 3d printing a replacement part at 10% of the OEM replacement cost. (I'm pretty sure the prestik holding it closed is the same stuff I put in there nearly a decade ago now!)

Glad to see it remained on forum!

Enjoy the car! These are so, so special and I miss it more often than I care to say!

Oh, one thing, the doors are the OEM units just sprayed black (they'd never be able to spray match the aluminium look finish so I thought safer just to go black). How is the centre console leather holding up? TBH that was a mod I should have done on day 1!

Yes that same prestik is unsuccessfully holding the sunglasses holder closed, I'll try figure something out and rely on a bit of luck to find a good used one...New ones are utter madness! The leather on the centre console is hold up great, it was a good mod indeed!

Also, if you do decide you have the infinite money hack on and want to spend a considerable fraction of the cars total value on a mod:

Congrats Benj, she must be a peach to drive and listen to her sing.

@momo1 had some lovely interior bits he had made for his Z4M, not sure if he still has it..

Congrats!!! I have had a few fun drives with Avi with this car when i had my Z4M, he really took great care of the car!
i actually had a spare sunglasses holder as i swapped my old 3.0si interior for the M including roofliner. unfortunatley i think i misplaced it or gave it away to a forum member that wanted the old roof lining as i just wanted to get rid of it.
all my alcantara bits were sold shortly after i sold the car Z4M

but back to the car , the eventuri intake was absolutely amazing, we did a group buy a few years back, the S54 on its own has a great intake noise but the Eventuri definitely enhances it, it was almost addictive, im sure your gona take it over the 3500rpm mark every time you get a chance.

Congratulations Benji! I knew you would be the right buyer when we met. My fault for the long test drive, I should’ve warmed up the car before you got there and also known my area better😂

I also made sure you revved it out, the charm isn’t at 3000rpm on these cars😉

Enjoy many miles of smiles in this car. It has treated me so well and I had a chat with Thomas earlier today about how reliable this car has been as well, the S54 has that real bmw charm in it, easily.

Like I stressed a few times before you left on Saturday. Expect the rear to kick out in the wet on those tyres 🤣. It’s super fun when you’re ready for it to snap, it seems those tyres are only coming off that car when they are shot😅

Conveniently there is a Skid Pan event next weekend. Fancy that.

It's a new layout as well, so will be expecting much sideways action from you. You set the bar in the E34 M5 with spectacular sideways antics whilst going the wrong route on the course, not sure if that was on purpose or not? LOL.

Congrats on the new wheels. Wishing you many safe and happy miles ahead.

For that kind of dosh, I would rather extend to a full carbon airbox... Have never been a fan of carbon on interiors tho...

I should have added the best and longest test drive :ROFLMAO: I have had the traction control spoil the fun too early on a few occasions already, maybe after the skid pan I will have more confidence to switch it off on public roads...

Thank you everyone for the kind words, I am so excited for the ownership experience!

Congrats, and welcome to S54 life! So cool that this car continues to be owned by forum members.

You say its not a project car, but I doubt it will be long until the small upgrades start coming ;) and I think a CPT roadtrip via the Garden Route is in order!
