My first BMW E82 135i

So round 1 was this past weekend. I struggled initially with the setup and how the car drives.

But after some coaching and advice from some friends I managed to drop 2.5 seconds and finished third in class. Lost out on 2nd place by a tenth of a second.

The car feels more responsive, However I feel these RE71 Semi Slicks aren't as grippy as the previous RE11s.

I also ran into protection due to the oil getting too hot for the first time so I guess I will need to look ar a bigger oil cooler.

Didn't have any other issues really but I need to get this turbo sorted so I can add more boost and get to the 300kw goal.

Also found I was sliding around alot in my seat this time and my rib and ass cheeks oddly were the most sore from trying to stay put. I found a seat and harness on facebook today so I guess next mod would be Half Cage and seats with harnesses.

I was hoping to get to the widening of the body to accommodate the 265 square setup I have planned but alas that will have to wait a bit.

Here's some pics and so from the event and the seat I got.

So finally some more updates.

Got the seats in and mocked up measurements for the half cage. Also got my new wheels 18X9.5J ET30 to try get the 265 square setup to work.

They actually fit better than expected and with some work from a body shop I think they can work. Really excited to see how the car handles with them.

The weight savings on the seats are a good 40KGS and the wheels are 4KGS so total savings of 44KGS.

Really hoping this gives me the edge at the upcoming races.

So with the car still looking very rough I decided to race it with just wide fenders and the 265 square setup.

First session out I did a 1:14.3 but soon realized my previous braking points are now too early and I was over slowing the car.

Session 2 I started pushing it harder as confidence grew with the new found grip, The times came down to a 1:11.5 this was 1.5 seconds than my previous PB when I ran the car without seats (60kg weight saving)

To say the least I was very chuffed.

Another competitor was gaining on me in his very fast F30 330D so for the shoutout I knew I had to just full send it. With some driving coaching from a friend I gained another second to end up doing a 1:10.5 around Zwartkops. This placed me in first place about 1.1 seconds ahead of the 330d.

This was something I never could imagine in my 135...

The car feels really planted and the diff works well, I had a slide into turn 4 at 140kmh and could save it. With the open diff we definitely would have gone off.

Next week the car can go back to the panel beater to finish up the bodywork and then it's time to pull the turbo to get this boost issue sorted.

Thanks for reading.

Why am I only seeing this thread now... Awesome build. I'm still toying with this exact idea. I love the E82 shape and I think this is the next platform to build. How easy/difficult is it to setup the car or make adjustments? I know compared to the E36 the suspension is a lot more complex to get dialed in.

It's got more adjustment yes, The biggest issue for me has been making wide wheels work.

So Round 3 was this weekend.

Managed to secure another P1 but it was quite tight between myself and Rodger in the Mustang. Before the last session a tenth separated us.

Going into the Shootout I sent it a bit harder and managed to pull another 0.7s ahead. And 10th place overall.

Here's a POV from the fastest lap.

Car was looking good bru! I was passenger for a few laps in the yellow Cupra before it died. Lekker track, interesting seeing the difference between how your two cars handle it.

I saw it ended up being towed, What happened?
Not sure exactly what the issue is, but something gearbox related. Clutch stays on the floor and gearbox fluid moved from the inside to the outside of the car. Could just be the cylinder, we'll find out. Good day out though, first time at the track and he found 3 seconds so that was cool.

My brother cooked up some billet trailing arms. Working on completing the remainder of the suspension arms before Kyalami.
