Stunning Caravelle there :praise:

Always loved these. And yes, as young as I am I went looking for one before I bought my Jetta :fencelook:

But correct me if I'm wrong, didn't the Caravelle come in a 2.1 litre 4-speed, a 2.3 litre 4-speed and 2.6 litre 5-speed, instead of 2.5?

The 2.6 came a little after and replaced the 2.5. Essentially the same, just a weee bit extra on the power and torque. I had the 2.6 and it was probably the best family go away car ever! space galore and a very stable car. Great towing a boat, don't feel the trailer apart from a weight aspect, no pulling left and right felt at all.

@Jandre - The 2.3 was never sold in Caravelle trim, just as Microbus.
Too bad the Synchro production stopped so soon.

@ChefDJ - the 2.6 was the upgrade from the 2.5. Probably the same block (both 5cyl Audi) but maybe different head and software.

The 2.3 was the thirstiest of the range, even more than the 2.1. Best engine is the 2.6. Or whack in a Toyota diesel when the Audi kips.

Bought me a family car a week or so ago.

1994 VW Caravelle 2.5i with 152 000km on the clock. One owner car.

Spares keys have never been used. Full service history, everything original. Shell and BP is going to love me.

:=):

AWESOME buy and condition is unreal!!:praise:
Greatest family get away car I ever owned. Travelled all round the RSA with it and towed 18ft speed boats no problem. I had a 2.6i '97/98 model I think, bought it for R110k and sold it a few years and km's later for R134k!

I also grew up with them since about mid primary school.

I remember our first one was a 1.9l water cooled Kombi. Then a 2.1l Microbus.

Later at the office we had a 1.8l VW Van, a 2.3i Volksiebus, another 2.1i Microbus, 2.3i Microbus, and now I have the Caravelle. (Which my workshop guys will not touch).

I remember we went to Transvaal in the 1.9l Kombi back in the 80's. It was torture.

The 1,8l Van we used as a back up vehicle on a Namibian tour. More torture.

it is not the world's fastest car. Not by a long shot. It's more a case of going everywhere, slowly.

I have the M5 safely tucked away in the garage for when the need for speed arise.

damn what a nice buy. I have always wanted one of these :inlove:

You will be surprised how chuckable these are. Near 50/50 weight distribution. We lived in Camps Bay, CT and it was great in the twists.

And only insurable (is there such a word)? for half the asking prices.

This is/ was the dilemma I had. So i went and begged VW Barons to give me a valuation certificate of what they are actually selling for on the market, so that I can try and get Santam to insure it for more.

Excellent ride. I still miss my 2.6i Microbus:in-love:

The 2.1i was a boxer motor and torquey.

The 2.5 and 2.6 wre in line 5s from Vorsprung.

Glad to see it still has the front spoiler. They are as scarce as hens teeth.

A tip is to fill the allen key holding the mirrors with loctite:thumbs:
