Some of you may have seen my rare fine under the E39 thread, but as Quick///M once said “if it is not in the showroom it never happen”
I have been lucky enough to get my hands on what I believe is a rather rare E39 M5 (Oxford green with caramel interior) all original apart from a stainless steel exhaust system that breathes even more life into the beast.
My plans are to hold onto this one - i usually pull it out on a Sunday and drive a few km just to keep the fluids lubricating the necessary components.
Overall the car is in very good shape and the interior is impeccable for its age. Things about this car that stand out is firstly the drivetrain - a naturally aspirated V8 with a manual transmission is something special. The ride quality and the comfort from those leather seats is also very noticeable as well as the quirky 2000s technology firsts (telephone and TV that still catches SABC). It’s voice commands and Navigation is ancient, but it adds to the experience.
Power wise, it is not a slow car even by modern standards, will still run a 0-100 in mid 5secs and comes to life past 160km. On a breakfast run to magalies it was comfortably keeping up with some modded N55 135i and once at higher speeds the V8 comes into its own - it’s probably the Vanos that kicks in and considering that these were the fastest 4door cars in the world at launch in 1998 capable of 300km/h - it’s no surprise that once you start pushing on it keeps climbing. One can only imagine what it does at the coast.
