GoPro HD Hero 2 Motorsport video test

So I finally took my shiny new GoPro vid camera for a test drive. Set on full HD and the medium FOV angle since the camera was mounted above the dashboard. I like the fact that there are various FOV angles. Quite new to video editing, but managed to do a simple edit of the more relevant parts of the drive.

Sound quality is to be expected a bit limited due to the simple mono integrated microphone, so will invest in a good stereo microphone at some point...

Thanks!

I reckon if I stick mine somewhere outside the car I will tether so that it does not fall off the car if the suction cup fails. Must still experiment some more, but the way I had it mounted there was a lot of side to side swaying, so might try using one of the flat attachments and stick it down somehow. Need to get the skeleton housing and then a decent microphone...

try just taking the camera and housing and use prestick (on the piece that mounts into the mounting brackets and it will not pull the paint off) and duck tape it, works on bikes doing 270+

If you guys are serious about video editing and need some good software advice or hardware to buy, gimme a shout. I am a film director after all and can point you in the right direction.

That being said, a good video mic would be the Rode NTG 2, sells for about R3000.00 but hell it is clean. Its a condenser directional mic...

if you want a really amazing sound recorder, look for the Zoom H4n, 4 channel hand held recorder. Amazing tool that records 24bit 96khz, 4 channels...

Ok bye!!!

Thanks guys!!

@ kabal

Yep, I reckon once I have mastered using and editing I will upload some HD vids, but local bandwidth and speed makes it tricky. This uploaded vid was 640x360 and the file size around 140MB - took a little over two hours on my 384k line. I reckon the full HD edited video would be around 1GB in size...

@ Dax

I was also thinking about using prestick - good tip, and I reckon it will work a lot better than the suction cup holder. Not to mention kinder to the paintwork.

@ Dr Evil and Freerider

LOL, that could be pretty epic! Accent makes it hey?!

@ maximus

It's awesome, still feel extremely spoilt with this!!

@ Twins

Thanks Charles! This camera is very solid and I reckon can probably take a fair amount of punishment. The suction cup holder is pretty good, but does allow a certain amount of rocking and shaking, but in reality not bad. The FOV angle options are great, and even the fact that you can set the up/down orientation for hanging or mounting on surfaces.

@ Seether

Thanks! Love the sound of these I6's! Sound quality is not too bad, but the road and wind noise does tend to drown out most of the engine note a lot of the time...

@ Crash_Nemesis

Many thanks!! Yep, need to get the skeleton housing for this cam then I can invest in a nice stereo mic - something that can deal better with the in car road and wind noises. Thanks, will definitely give you a shout at some point! :)

@ Pravesh

It's really an awesome piece of kit and very versatile! Very impressed with it!!

Greg, you also have a GoPro hey?

Yea, but I have the previous gen, so keen to get my hands on the new one, as it can do 100fps @ 720p (for slomo) and has that variable FOV option you mentioned, which could come in handy. I've used it for doing timelapse alot too, cuz you can just mount it and leave it. I bought a viewfinder for mine. Wondering if the new one comes with one, or whether my existing one would work on the new one. Just such a cool tool. Enjoy.

Thanks! Yep, still playing around with it at this stage, but yes, did read that it can do up 120 fps for super slow motion - the timelapse feature is very cool, must try it out! No view finder either, but can get the attachment for it - suspect it's the same or similar to what you then have. Seems to be loads of accessories for this! So far I love the versatility of this thing, and seems to be a proven design - they even have a 3D HD solution! Since the battery life is roughly 2.5 hrs I bought an 8GB Extreme (class 10) SD card which can store about 2 hrs of full HD - if necessary can always pinch the 16 Gb Extreme from my Canon... Must actually see how yours is with the viewfinder attachment - would be something worth getting I reckon.
