Doing the short shift install is really easy with the 5-spd box, with the 6-spd boxes it is a bit more involved but still not hard.

If you are going do a short shifter, you might also consider the Z4 shifter, it is a lot shorter than the 545i, it is what I have on my car. Not to everyone's taste but I like how it looks and feels.
