Had a disappointing but rewarding day at Zwartkops.
My previous fastest lap at the Z, with the GF in the car(+-50kg extra), was a 1:22:7. The time I was chasing the Leon Cupra I had my mate in the car, extra 90kg, his cellphone timing had us around 1:23:-ish. So the idea was to slowly settle into a rhythm and work on my lines and see just how much time I can make up with no ballast weight.
To my surprise, I was able to do two laps in 1:21:8, this was great as I knew I would get faster once had got myself dialled in. However, the lap after the second 1:21:8, the cooling system on the BMW failed. As I went into corner 2 at about 120km/h before my breaking point (the fluid must have already leaked),as I braked there was no tracking on the left front wheel, because of the coolant being "silky". Left wheel takes the load in right hand corner so rear came out and it went into a slide. Managed to keep it sort of controlled and ended up in the sandbox.
The hose going from the thermostat to the expansion tank failed. My suspicion is that the system started to warm up and get hot, which is normal when you track, the pressure build up must have caused the pipe to pop. I had no warning lights on the dash either. Spent the rest of the morning waiting for a flatbed to take the car home. I have stripped most of the cooling tubes, will see what else might need replacing, might as well do some DIY while it is stationery.
