I sent the Duke to KTM to have fixed, the timing chain tensioner failed.

Picked it up this past Saturday, and it broke down again this afternoon. I am pretty sure the issue is timing chain related again. :rage::rage:

Updates (mixed emotions)

Bad news first - the KTM is dead and up for sale as a non-runner. Valve stem failed and I am not going to fork out 21k to get it fixed. It went in to get the timing chain tensoiner & timing chain replaced. Got it back at the beginning of the month, and on my way home (5 days after collecting it) it broke down again. I have had my fight/dicussion with KTM. Either I have a dub or the worst luck but I am not going to spend 27k on the KTM this month. Just to have it break down again.

Here is a breakdown of its breakdown history;

Warrant Claims
@17 885km - Gearbox failure - repaired by KTM Raceworks
@22 653km - Failed conrod bolts - repaired by KTM Raceworks

Maintenance
September 2016 - Chain and sprockets replaced by KTM Raceworks
March 2018 - Chain and chain guard replace by owner
@29 4xxkm - Thermostat failure - repaired by owner (thermostat, head gasket, air & oil filter, spark plug, two coolant hoses and the shifter baffle lever replaced as well. Head was skimmed by CJ’s Automotive Engineering)
@31 566km - Timing Chain failure - repaired by KTM Cape Town
@ 31 702km (current mileage) - Valve stem failure - Inspected and diagnosed by KTM Cape Town.

Insurance claim
July 2017 - Knocked over while lane splitting - all damaged parts replaced and repaired by KTM Raceworx.

If it does not sell, I will part it out.
I have checked with my insurance they can't help, and I am not a fraudster. So I will have to take the knock, unfortunately.

Pics I took the day before it broke down

The damage

Onto good news;

The e82 now has some carbon bits glued to it. I might have been to sparing with the glue but I was afraid it might become brittle before I was able to clean it up. It won't fall off but it needs to be filled to look consistent.

The MX5 received more donor parts from another MX5 NA that met it's death via stripping for parts.

New cluster shroud with stainless steel rings around speedo and rev counter. And sun visors that can fold in half - this way I can get the top down with having to move the visors out of way to open the latches.

Also mileage milestone for the MX5

Bought these second hand carbon mirrors for the MX5, need make up mounting brackets before I can fit them.

Not much has been happening with the e46, just glad to have it back to "normal".
Some through back shots from a shoot with @Spiro & @Divio

I would definitely never own a KTM again, even if I do think the Super Duke is epic.

We will see how long I will be able to contain the itch before I "need" two wheels again.

Sorry DB. I want to say it's just shitty luck but I think it's more of getting a lemon. I hope you get where you want to be.

yoh, that sucks balls bra!

I take it engine swaps on KTMs or bikes in general is not yet that commonplace ? Can't you find a wrecked KTM bike and swap out the heart ? a running bike will be much easier to sell, and take far less time than parting it out ??

Thats a crap one DB. I hope you don't take too much of a hit.

I think I've seen the red MX-5 around milnerton / Montague Gardens a few times. You must join a Fanatics meet soon, so we can check out the 125 too :smilebounce:

Thanks @Sash, one vrot lemon :roflol:

@CA_130, the effort of swoping in another motor, is not worth it to me.

I am done with it. Either it sells or I part it out or just dump it.

@///Avi I work in the Montague Gardens area. The last meet was on when there was F1 I think, why I skipped it.

The ktm will physically change hands tomorrow to the new owner. He had an accident and cracked the frame on his so the two will be come one and live on atleast. I am quite sad, as it was my first bike ever. However I cannot support its short comings any longer.[/align]

One last pic

Some random after work shots of the e46 and mx5. Currently I alternate between the two daily. Great to experience the completely different machines back to back.
