My Silverstone Metallic E92 V8 M3

Today marks exactly 4 years I have had the privilege of owning my dream car and what a journey it has been.. I still remember quite vividly the experience of braving all things COVID, just so I could finally have this car home and the drive down was certainly worth the risk taken! I said it before and I will say it again, having had the car for many years – Meeting my hero, did not leave me disappointed.. If anything I have gained a greater appreciation for just what this car can offer the true enthusiast. Its only apt that I pay homage to the post 4 years ago, with a picture of a place the car loves the most.

Post the last update, I am disappointed to mention that I didn’t follow through on what I had said, around just sticking to routine maintenance.. Having had the exhaust done, I knew the annual service was due and contacted TuneTech to book the car in for the oil change to be done. Whilst chatting I mentioned the car had an exhaust done and was immediately advised that I do software, regardless of anyone telling me otherwise, simply because the operating parameters had changed with the addition of the performance exhaust. I was told that they would do a tune for me, when the car was booked in, but I prefer to deal with only one company when it comes to software. I had also purchased my service items off a fellow forumite some time back and wanted TuneTech to use these for the service, but that was something they wouldn’t allow since all M car oil had changed to Motul 5W50, which left me to ponder on my Liqui Moly 10W60 specification.

I called my trusted tuning house @Xcede Performance and was also advised of the same feedback, to which I quickly reconsidered my choice in modifying the car’s exhaust system… The subsequent use of the car quickly remedied that situation and I had decided to just go ahead with having the car tuned, as I did not want the stock system back on. I arranged to pop past the shop for a read and saw them doing quite a bit of maintenance work on a whole variety of cars, I just decided at that point to have the oil service done whilst I was getting the car flashed. The read took a solid 2 hours, I had honestly thought Juvan was kidding when he told me it would take that long.

The brief for me was simple, I didn’t need to win any dyno wars and I just wanted something that enhanced the hardware already on the car, whilst keeping in mind the need for long term reliability. Sherwin has probably done in excess of 60+ S65’s and knew what I was looking for, the file was ready a few days later and I booked the car in for a quiet December morning. I requested we do the tuning prior to the service, so the car was duly strapped to the rollers for a base run and then the map was loaded. With no adaptation time or additives, I was quite chuffed with the results – Even Sherwin seemed to agree, just judging from his response in the video. The dyno graph looks pretty good and highlights the way the car feels, I really think at the coast this would be quite a force..

Having come so far, the only other mod left was a performance drop in and I got my hands on a BMC filter. The small induction noise adds a subtle something to the whole package and car definitely feels like it breathes a bit better, placebo or not.

With the service done, I have been using the car to get some mileage in, super happy with how the car feels now and everything just seems to work together for the better. The sad truth of altitude robbing NA engines does have an effect, but the car feels nice and linear. The tune definitely refined the overall drive and the improved burbles on the overrun are the cherry on top. Quick parts run to ABM to get some items for the X5 back in Feb.

I also needed a brake fluid flush a few weeks ago and had the car booked in at JSN. Viz has been great to deal with, always good sharing petrol-head conversations and seeing what is in the shop, whilst the car is being worked on. I especially like the way Silverstone looks in different lighting conditions and the colour has not grown old, at least not for me.

I popped by the Dyno Day at Xcede this past weekend and I had hoped to put the car on the dyno again to see what difference adaptation time and the drop in filter would make. Sadly I wasn’t able to make it work timing wise for the car to be dyno’d due to family commitments, but there is always next time. What an awesome event and the turnout was stellar, ran into some of the OG’s and met some new faces. I guess with that, the last picture of the car on the dyno will have to do.

At this point I believe I am done, but I know better than to trust myself with sentiments like these.. My exploratory plans for a larger garage, should keep me (hopefully) busy for a while.
Excellent read Kev. Such a special car and you deserve this! you really are a Petrol head of note and one of the most passionate people for the BMW badge that I have ever met :) Privileged to have been part of this journey and see this V8 beast transition. Videos and pics don't do justice!

I have wanted a E92 for close onto 10 years, but life and school fees and financial set backs and I still dreaming. I love reading about your ownership with the car. Enjoy it. One day soon.....

4 years later and it feels like just yesterday we were chatting about how you wanted a V8 M3. I haven't been too frequent on the forum, but I have been lurking. I absolutely adore how this is more than just a car to you, and rightfully so. Seeing your passion behind the wheel of this stunning E92, it's clear that dreams do come true. When we went for that first spin, I said "this isn't fast or scary", to which you replied, "I'm not used to the car and manual gearbox". What a distant joke, after recently driving one myself. Almost reminds me of being on a motorbike (iykyk).
This car is poetry in motion, and I hope that every drive continues to be a victory lap for you, your testament to hard work, perseverance, and unwavering love for BMW.

And just like that, its been almost 6 years with my hero, the S65... My last update was 1.5 years ago, where has the time gone?! To repeat myself, time has been very scarce and life has been hectic.. I will try to recall the last 18 months for posterity.

I know I said I was done in my last post but clearly I wasn't.. Since fitting the 359M's and doing the performance upgrades, I felt like the car moved from the subtle, classy persona to a more aggressive, sporty one - I took this opportunity to hit @FiRi@Rennzport up and get some carbon goodies for the car to celebrate the then, 4 year milestone. I opted for the splitters, mirror caps, rear performance spoiler and the diffuser to complete the look - A visit to the glass box was arranged once the goods arrived and all was in order. As always, Firi's hospitality, service and products are on point.

A few weeks after fitment was the BMWFanatic's Carfinated event at Sauber Technik's new premises and I took the opportunity stop by and have a chat with Fuzz and Azhar about ceramic coating the carbon bits and doing a top-up on the rest of the car.

I was really happy with the look of the carbon but the one thing that stuck out or rather didn't was the exhaust tips.. Nish did tell me when we did the exhaust I should fit the diffuser first but at that point, this wasn't on the cards.. You live and learn - Off to Nish to redo the exhaust tips.

As mentioned elsewhere, I had found another job opportunity and it was almost time to say goodbye to the old. What better way than some bad behaviour in the parking lot with the lumpy V8 before a farewell lunch..

A few months later was yet another excuse to use the car, a fellow fanatic purchased his V8M and wanted to hear the exhaust. We arranged a small meet up with a few gents in the area, all with wildly varying systems so he could give them a listen.. A very literal rumble in the concrete jungle.

A few weeks later I popped off to Sauber to have the carbon bits polished and ceramic coated, along with the car.

I was asked by a friend to pop by his shop, Elite Autoworkz with the M3 to take a picture with his client's newly acquired V8M, turns out it was another fanatic and we had a good chat, he also got to have a listen to the pipes on mine. Suffice to say, he quite liked the tone.

I had joined the E9x M3 club some time back and never been for a run. I always had FOMO seeing that many V8's in one place and had to experience it, when the meet popped up, I had to make a plan and I am glad I did! Having 50+ V8M's in one place was without a doubt an experience to behold.

May of this year was the Rennzport Breakfast run and what a run it was! I had never tested the removed limiter since doing the software and the opportunity presented itself in the form of 2 Porsches on the way to the destination point and I can say with certainty, that is the first and last time the car sees north of 3xxkm/h - it pulls hard!

The car was due for a service a few months ago, so I got in touch with @Clint@MMS AUTO and the car was booked in. The last service was done at 135k and the car had barely done 1.5k since then, but needed to be done on time as it was nearing 18 months. Some mandatory pics from the visit - more details on Clint's thread --> https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/threads/bmw-e92-m3-minor-engine-service.102396/

That brings 18 months of updates to a close and I haven't used the car in a few months, a drive is overdue and I am looking forward to better weather soon. Until the next update..
