Update - 216 098 km - Front Disks and Pads & Diff Oil Change
I recently started hearing a humming/whining sound from the rear of the 30d at low speeds only in 1st and 2nd gear. The sound was at first only audible on deceleration but after a few days it would appear on acceleration as well. I assumed that it was either bearings or the diff
Being new in GP, I was uncertain as to who to take the vehicle to. By chance I gave
@Silverbird_96kw a call who informed me that
@johndoe was back in business
I messaged Clinton on Friday evening and popped into his workshop on Saturday morning for a vehicle inspection
The following was discovered:
Cracked front disk
Humming diff/bearings
Low coolant
Loose airbox inlet pipe
The disks and diff were our biggest concern. The car was immediately booked in and
@johndoe started working on it Monday morning
The following was fitted/work done:
Febi Bilstein front brake discs
Hella Pagid front brake pad set
Brake wear sensor
Diff oil changed using Motul Motyl Gear 75w90 Oil
Coolant + Distilled water (50/50 Mix)
Brake fluid tested
Coolant system pressure tested
19 May 2025:
- Fitted the protective covers on the driver side seat, steering wheel and footwell
- Move car onto the lift
- Open bonnet, checked coolant level is low
- Cleaned and refitted the coolant tank cap
- Checked the brake fluid and removed the excess brake fluid
- Removed the wheels
- Stripped the brakes on the front, both discs, pads, caliper brackets, dust shields, guide pins
- Cleaned the rust off the wheel hubs, washed the dust shields, caliper brackets and bolts
- Reset the brake calipers, washed the hubs and brake calipers,
- Prepped the new pads with anti squeal spray
- Refitted BMW emblem on wheel center cap and fitted to the wheel
- Dried the hubs with compressed air, added copper anti seize onto the wheel hubs, fitted the dust shields
- Cleaned the new discs and fitted them
- Fitted the caliper bracket and new brake pads
- Greased and installed the guide pins, and retaining clip
- Removed the lower engine bay tray
- Filled up coolant tank and pressure tested the system for over 30 minutes, confirmed there are no leaks in the system
- Topped up the window washer fluid
- Measured tires and brakes
- Stopped there for today

20 May 2025:
- Went to BMW to get the diff oil
- BMW Northcliff only has 2 bottles in stock
- The car takes 3 and they want R2274. Which is too much
- Going to check with Goldwagen for the Motul alternative
- Raised vehicle, sprayed the diff oil plug with parts cleaner to clean any dirt/dust around the plug screw
- Removed the diff plug, cleaned the diff plug
- Extracted 1.2L of diff oil from the car, filled up the pump with 1.2L of new Motul diff oil and pumped it into the diff
- Refitted the oil plug and cleaned the area around the plug
- Disposed of the old diff oil
21 May 2025:
- Refit the air intake feed to the airbox so that its secure
- Check rear right brakes for the sound customer mentioned
- Remove wheel, remove brake pads and caliper bracket, clean contact surfaces with wire brush, refit pads and caliper bracket, refit wheel
- Blow engine bay with compressed air as its very dusty
- Take vehicle for a short test drive around 4km's to check brakes and listen for any funny sounds
- Come back and check brake fluid level
- Run diagnostics, picked up lots of error codes, cleared them and rescanned vehicle
- Reset CBS item for Front brakes
- Put the car on the lift and checked the rear right wheel for any sounds. There still is a slight sound but nothing major. This relates to the brake disc being old and warped a little bit
- Wiped down the engine bay with a damp cloth then applied a plastic treatment on all the black plastic covers
- Lastly I have put the battery on charge as it was a bit low
The above detailed breakdown is what Clinton provided daily with photographic evidence per step. The service received was phenomenal. Daily communication, meticulous attention to detail and solid advice from someone who doesn't just want the Client to waste money but get value for money
I am super impressed with the top tier workmanship from MMS Auto and will continue to support them
