Hi everyone,

Been lurking around here long enough and think its time I get my rides thread up and alive! ๐Ÿ˜

Some of you may recognize the vehicle as Gavin's old X3. An absolute gentleman who took great care of the X3. I hope to be able to look after the X as well as he did

Basic specs:
- Space Grey Metallic
- M-Sport
- Xenons
- Electric Towbar
- Sunroof
- Black leather interior
- BMW Professional Radio

Extras:
- Downpipe
- JB1
- Vari heat treated and slotted disks

I've had the vehicle for 4 months now and I've done over 10k km's already! The X is incredible to drive! Comfortable, spacious and super responsive for its size. The sound with the downpipe is something else!

In the time that I have it, I've done the following:

First on the cards was tyres. I opted for non runflats as I prefer driving around with a spare for peace of mind. Also staying in a little dorpie in the Free State means run flats aren't always easily accessible and the higher risk of potholes and cutting tyres makes non runflats more feasible

I did a little bit of DIY touches on the grilles by just spraying them gloss black for now. Would love to still get a set of gloss black dual slat kidney grills from Firi in the future

I recently found out that there was a Ceramic Pro facility in Bloemfontein which is about 100km away from where I stay. Decided to get the X polished by them as its much more convenient than having it done in Durban on JHB. They just did a paint correction polish with a few brush touches here and there and a light coating

Around the beginning of last month the X started feeling a little bit different. Being the first performance motor vehicle that I owned, I didn't really know what to expect. Luckily I had a buddy who was able to scan the vehicle for me. We noticed that the vehicle was missing and decided to pull the sparkplugs for a visual inspection. This is where the headaches started. Being in a small remote dorpie meant finding the correct sparkplug socket was impossible. This meant I had to go to Welkom which is 70km away to find the correct socket. After getting back home, removing the covers and removing the first coil pack, I discovered that the socket's diameter is too large. I was pretty frustrated at this point. Made a few calls the next day to find out if anyone in Welkom stocks a smaller diameter socket but had no luck with this. Luckily a friend of mine in Bloemfontein helped me out and we sourced the correct tools:

King Tony size 14 thin-wall 12pt socket
3/8" drive extension bar 150mm
3/8" female to 1/2" male adapter

I don't consider myself anywhere near to being a mechanic but decided that I'd like to get a bit more hands on with my vehicles. After seeing how many guys on the forum DIY, I decided to give it a try myself. I did some reading up and after acquiring the correct tools went about the whole process of removing the sparkplugs and doing an oil service while I'm at it. Basic servicing is so much easier than one thinks when you have the right tools. Although, I must say getting to the 4th, 5th and 6th plug was no joke.

I did the service using the following:
- Motul 8100 X-cess 5w-40
- NGK Laser Iridiums
- Mann filters

I came across this thread https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1824067 that's quite helpful for anyone that wants to perform DIY's on their F25 X3

Being the first time that I did a DIY like this meant I didn't take any pictures of the process but will definitely try and remember to take on future DIY's if I don't break anything else in the process ๐Ÿ˜‚

Enough reading, on to some pictures of the car

Hi,

Glad to see a new thread is active for this car now.

On the weekend, my daughter was telling me how much she misses the X3, lol. It really was a good all-round car. I miss it too.

Looking forward to future updates, and also glad to see you're getting your hands dirty and learning.

Wishing you many more happy miles. (Damn, 10000kms already?! lol. That would have taken us another 2 years to achieve)

Glad it went tot a good home and is being looked after.

That pic with the sun set is stunning. Wishing you many happy miles and smiles bro and welcome to the forum and the DIY fraternity.

One quick question, you fitted the laser iridium plugs, please send the part number as I just want to see which ones you fitted. Some of them need to be gapped in order to function properly on the x35s.

What a car, congrats yet again.
I should have scooped this one somehow :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Thread needs more pics though...

After the service it feels like an even better car
I'm back to daily duties in the 320d, so you can still scoop the X up in the future with low miles ๐Ÿ˜

Should have started the thread long time ago

The more time I spend with it, the more I enjoy it bud. Actually quite nice to get my hands dirty and learn, very rewarding feeling when everything is done

I really enjoyed that 10 000 km's but went back to the 320d now. The fuel bill was getting out of hand ๐Ÿคฃ

Jazakallah bro. Looking forward to future DIY's. Next up is brake pads

I fitted the SILZKBR8D8S. Car feels much better with them fitted
Please let it be that I don't have to remove all again to gap

I think you need to gap those plugs as well.

@Richard H can advise as he also has an x3 35i

MISFIRES

Hi Guys,

A bit of an update regarding the misfire issues on the X3

X3 35i
Downpipe
JB1
Charge pipe

This is what I've done so far:

  • Noticed a lack in performance on the vehicle and a slight misfire sound on idle, no errors on dash
  • Scanned the vehicle and picked up no errors
  • Checked misfires per cylinder and they were crazy
  • Replaced plugs with NGK SILZKBR8D8S - Left stock gap as this is the recommended sparkplug for the vehicle as per NGK website

BKFliSw.jpg

  • Immediately after replacing the plugs the vehicle sounded better and pulled better through the rev range
  • Still heard a slight misfire sound on idle, almost like an old car with a cam
  • Scanned vehicle again and picked up misfires on cylinder 1, 2 and 3 but only when the vehicle is cold
  • Once the car is warm there is no misfires and no lack of performance
The issue was worrying me and I didn't know what to make of it so this past weekend I did the following:
  • Removed JB to fault find from a stock car. Didn't know if the JB could somehow have an effect
  • Started the car and got the following misfires on cold start idle
Cyl 1 - 5
Cyl 2 - 6
Cyl 3 - 15
Cyl 4 - 0
Cyl 5 - 1
Cyl 6 - 2
  • After 5 minutes of idling the results increased as follows
Cyl 1 - 10
Cyl 2 - 9
Cyl 3 - 25
Cyl 4 - 1
Cyl 5 - 2
Cyl 6 - 3
  • I then reset the values and went for a 1km drive, keeping the revs under 2500rpm, car still cold
Cyl 1 - 0
Cyl 2 - 1
Cyl 3 - 19
Cyl 4 - 0
Cyl 5 - 0
Cyl 6 - 0
  • I then reset the values again and drove for a 1km again, keeping the revs under 2500rpm, car now warm
Cyl 1 - 0
Cyl 2 - 0
Cyl 3 - 0
Cyl 4 - 0
Cyl 5 - 0
Cyl 6 - 0

Cylinder 4 gave the least misfires so I swopped the coil pack from cylinder 3 and 4 and repeated the whole process. The misfires still all remained on cylinder 3

I have to give a big thanks to @Richard H and @osiris who have given me advice on what to check and how to check. The DIY world is new to me

Based on my own research now and the advice that I received from @osiris, I'm going to go back and gap the plugs to 0.022 and hope it solves my issue. Hopefully I don't have a dying injector. Will report back after the weekend

Any other guide and advice is appreciated

SPARKPLUGS, DOWNPIPE, CHARGEPIPE

Hi guys,

So just an update on what has happened since the misfire issue

@Richard H and @osiris were very helpful and gave advice wherever they could, however with my limited knowledge and experience around motors I decided to rather have the car checked out by someone who knows what they are doing

I contacted Aadil from Seelo Performance on Saturday morning. Aadil was very helpful but could only do so much over the phone. After speaking and discussing a few options, I decided to drive to Jhb the next day. Aadil opened his workshop on a Sunday to accommodate me and was very helpful. After scanning and checking a few things out, we realised that the X would have to stay at Seelo Performance for a bit

Aadil gave the car a once over and the following was found:
Car was over fueling
Plugs not gapped
Charge pipe not secure
Downpipe design not 100%

Aadil installed and gapped a new set of plugs, refitted the charge pipe and installed a new downpipe for me. Aadil also used the car for a few days to make sure there are no errors or faults before I bring the car all the way back to Bultfontein.

The car is now error free and running superb! Even with the JB1 removed, it feels very strong. The sound with the new downpipe is deeper at WOT but quieter at cruising speeds which I love. The car is also lighter on fuel now ๐Ÿ˜

I'm really glad that the car is 100% now and that I can enjoy the drive to Durban fully now this long weekend ๐Ÿฅฐ

Rear Brake Pads & Disks + Roof Racks + Roofbox

Hi guys

Not much new happening here

Had the rear pads and disks replaced. Opted for TRW pads and OEM disks that were slotted and heat treated

I also purchased a set of new OEM roof racks and found an OEM BMW roofbox to go with it. The roofbox is quite handy when travelling as I drive around with a full size spare in the boot

The X3 did the trip to Durban effortlessly. Going to Durban I was pulling an empty trailer with and coming back I had the roofbox on and the trailer fully loaded. Did quite a bit of hooning in and around Durban as well as the X3 loved the coastal air ๐Ÿ˜

With all the mixed driving I still got a combined of 14.7l/100km for the entire trip
