Hi Gents

If you could have either one with the 2020 models around the similar mileage which would you choose considering the price difference is not far apart from each other and you would keep the car outside of its MP. What would be the better option in the long run.

Thanks gents

I had the same choice to make and chose the 30d mainly due to reliability even though the 50d is a bullet and generally comes much better specced than the 30d models.

The 50D has 4 turbos and is an extremely complex engine. Not known for being very reliable, especially in the G series. There's a reason why some 30d's are fetching more than 50d's with the same mileage and condition.

I read this article last week.

The 30d is inherently more reliable over the long term.

I met a guy at ZF last year with a 2010 X5 30d with 300,000km and the only issue he had was the ZF box (since it was never serviced before).

The M50d is very much a keep-on-Motorplan car.

Snippets from article 👇:

" The Mokholo family had the misfortune of mechanical failure in their BMW X7 M50d days after the Motorplan contract had expired.

Communications manager Hailey Philander confirmed that the company extended goodwill to the customer for the turbocharger repair up to the value of R262,975.65.

Repairs could only commence once the engine and cylinder head were removed - the cost of which (R52,944.39) would not be covered. "

Thanks, never knew the G series had four turbos. No wonder the cost of replacement runs into the hundreds of thousands! Crazy!! And then one can boost the power of the single turbo 3l diesel to almost that of the four turbo M50d!

That is exactly why the 30d is the best choice here! 👌

Eish thats another barrel of fish. Those N63 engines suffer from oil starvation issues because of the hot V setup they run, that’s why im staying away. But a M550i is a tempting prospect
I find the 30d to have sufficient power for what it does. Even if it had double the power, I don't think I'd get the same thrill from it as I do driving a small hothatch with half the power as the G05 is so heavy and big that you don't really feel the power. I had mine tuned and later fitted a DP but I feel like just putting it back to stock now as the car smokes. (And the whole back is full of soot lol)

I don't think you'll go wrong with it, look for a nicely specced 1 with comfort seats over the standard sport seats as it makes a huge difference.
