Guys, should we create a thread for the people that will be attending ODI for the first time. I.e. Should we bring our own food? How far is the nearest petrol station etc...

Hi,

Food Items:
Halaal food will be on sale.
ODI Canteen will be open, they sell coldrinks and food items.

I would prefer to support ODI and the Halaal cater for food as they will be coming through for us especially. However, you can carry your own food if you want.

NO OPEN FIRE BRAAI's allowed. Obvious reasons such as Open Veld and Fuel canisters will be the norm. You can use a skottel.

Petrol Stations:
ODI is pretty remote located, there are fuel stations, i think in a 20km radius. Could be wrong.

I would be prepared fuel wise to get you to the track, race and atleast leave you with 50km range so you can get out of ODI to the closest filling station to fill up and go home.

Directions to ODI:
DIRECTIONS TO GET TO ODI RACEWAY VENUE FROM JOBURG

Take the N1 (Ben Schoeman Highway) to Pretoria. This will become Potgieter Street with C-Max Prison on your left. Proceed down Potgieter Street until you get Church Street. Turn left into Church Street and continue until you get to DF Malan Drive. Turn right into DF Malan Drive and go straight until you get the PPC cement factory on your left. Proceed past until you get METRO on your left. Just after Metro you will get a turnoff that says Mabopane. Turn left onto this road - called Mapopane free-way. Pass one turnoff until the road makes a 270 degree turn. Proceed over the mountain. Pass first turnoff and cross over N4 pass Rosslyn turn off. Take the M20 Hebron turnoff. (7.7km from N4 brigde) turn left and go straight. Be on the lookout for the Marula Sun boards. Proceed straight on until you get the Marula Sun board approximately 10.3km to 4-way stop MABOPANE GARANKUA. Continue straight over 4-way stop for approximately 6.2km finding thatch roofs on left and a Liquor store on your right. Across the road is a road that turns left (sign board to ODI RACEWAY). Turn left and follow this road. This will lead you to the track entrance.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTE
to get to ODI Raceway

Travel on N1 towards Petersburg. Take N4 split just after Zambezi turnoff. Follow through tollgate. Take 4th turnoff R80 SHOSHANGUVE left, road makes a complete 270 degree turn. Travel in a northerly direction for 7.7km. Proceed past ROSSLYIN turnoff until you see Marula Sun boards. Take HEBRON off ramp and turn left. Go straight for approximately 10.3km until you find the board marked Marula Sun. There will now be a 4-way crossing MABOPANE GARANKUA. Set Speedo to zero and go across the 4-way stop for 6.2km. You will pass thatch roofs on your left and a Liquor store on your right. At the sign board (ODI RACEWAY), turn left and follow this road. This will lead you to the track entrance.

How to get to ODI?

S25° 33' 01"
E27° 56' 50"

After my first visit to ODI in 2013, i compiled this list of items needed.

For those going to ODI for the first time, i thought i would take some time to advise you about ODI and what to take along with you...

Firstly, ODI is about 90-100km(IIRC) from JHB Central. The route to ODI is 20% freeway and 80% rural. There are a millions of huge speed bumps along the 80% rural roads. The roads are not bad, but keep your speed down and look at the road carefully. There are some potholes along the way. Becareful for taxi's that drive 20km/h and dont let you pass or that want to overtake you on the rubble while you slow down for bumps/potholes.

The Xcede guys suggested i carry the following, thanks to their advise, i survived the day - Just kidding, its not so bad but best be prepared.

Due to the fact that this place is an open field with a tarred strip, please carry the following:

1. Something for shade while you not in the car - Gazebo or Hat. If you take a Gazebo, make sure its pegged down properly, it tends to get windy and the Gazebo might dissapear or hurt someone.

2. Sunblock - Lots of it. As there is no shade, you need some protection from the sun.

3. Water/Drinks - You will need to hydrate yourself pretty often as you have to wear helmet, long pants and top. Have a tshirt on and use a thin jacket when participating. Remember, you in a line of maybe 10-15 cars at a time in the heat so you perspire a lot.

4. ICE - To keep your drinks cool and to cool down the car. It helps wonders...

5. Cooler box to keep 3 and 4 in.

6. Food - They do have a little shop that sells chows, but they do not cater for halaal/kosher/veg. There should however be a caterer. (PS - For this event, we have a halaal caterer)

Use it dont use it...

The most important advise i can give anyone, go and give it your all... You will love it!!

Thanks for the info Yas,

My preference would be to take the N1 /N4 with the toll. I think that going through PTA central is a bit of a PITA. I used to travel to Soshanguve to campus and i chose the freeway all the time, distance is further but the drive much better, unless theres an accident on the N1, then you are screwed.

The warning regarding the taxis is real, these guys will be in no hurry and when you try to pass chances are theres a massive pothole in front. Then theres those taxis that drive on the oncoming lane since they dont care about speed bumps or potholes.

Maybe a convoy for racers? Anyone want to coordinate? ETA at ODI should be 8:30am.

Racers, remember, Scrutinizing closes at 11am and first 1km run should go down at 9am

We should be done setting up by 8:30am, but will allocate 2 or 3 people to start scrutinizing from 8am.

I will send an email closer to the day. But if anyone wants to lead the convoy, this will be appreciated as we have couple entries from KZN and CTN.
