The replacement M62 shaped headache

I have heard so many RR horror stories...I keep telling myself that is is the "simple" early BMW version with very little to go wrong except for air suspension, electronics, timing chain, vanos, gearbox etc etc :ROFLMAO: fingers crossed...A set of rear shocks are about 12k which I will get to...eventually...

I fit the later chrome steering wheel spokes to replace my horrid peeling black spokes...much better

I have so far done about 400km since fixing the gearbox and I have not had a single bing! Fuel consumption on the open road is about 13L/100 which is less than ideal, but quite manageable. I love/hate that there is no instantaneous fuel consumption readout on the dash like similar BMWs, but I suppose that is poor mentality. Only peasants keep their eye on trivialities like fuel consumption.

This car keeps throwing pleasant surprises at me...for example, water beads off the paint and it does not need new wipers. These are small things that are firsts for me...I must be getting better at making poor decisions...
Hi @Benji. Is it for sale? 🤣

I always wanted one, but my 2 sacks aren't as big as yours 🤪

Safe travels brotherman.

I heard that the worst public road in South Africa is about an hours drive away, so naturally had to take the Ranger Rover on its first proper adventure over Breedtsnek pass. The road was indeed terrible but the Range Rover hardly noticed, this car is fantastic offroad and simply plods on over seemingly impassable obstacles. These early L322s did not have terrain response, but the traction control quickly brakes a slipping wheel which means you keep your momentum.

As for the road, it is quite terrible indeed with some extremely rocky sections which find you saying prayers to the tire gods. There is also a nice brewery on the bottom of the mountain to reward you for your airconditioned drive. Otherwise, nothing else to report, the Rage Rover is as refined and thirsty as ever

Amazing bud glad to see you enjoying the full capability of it already!

Would you say this has been your best car buy to date?

Provided the car doesnt implode, I would say yes, without a shadow of doubt. I could probably sell it for 3 times what I bought it for, but I dont think I could get rid of her now. As a slightly surprising bonus, she fits in my garage, she is about the same length as the E39.

I am enjoying how the Range Rover makes you get out and do things, the approving nods you get from balding men in their lifted double cabs and the general air of invincibility you get from driving a block of flats.

You were NOT supposed to be that quick!! I'm going to Cape Town on holiday at the beginning of April, if it's still available I'll go look. Then I will tell my wife it's your fault 😁
Nee chom,
you can forget about blaming Benji, we can organize you a medical note for your "fall out the shower" while in Cape Town LOL

I've learnt how to work around problems she may potentially give me, like an alternative route on Waze or something like that.....

Reminds me of what Jeremy Clarkson said when he was shopping for a car for Lisa...something along the lines of "Lisa wont be impressed but she will grow to like it"

With some space opened up in my garage, the L322 could finally be brought in from the cold.

Looking sorry for herself after more than 2 months standing

Yes, my front left does drop after a couple days, I need to diagnose it further, but lets be realistic, she probably needs a new set of front air springs. But first, give her a wash and immidiately get her dirty by playing in my local construction site. Handwashing this car is a proper workout! Happy to report the paint is in excellent condition with minimal contamination indicating it was well cared for.

As always, it does not look as impressive in the pictures, but this car really makes you adjust your expectations offroad.

Replaced the missing tow hook cover

Swapped out the broken & scratched ashtray for a more useful cupholder

During some idle FBMP browsing, with my location stupidly set to Birmingham, I found an impossibly rare set of early autobiography doorcards with two-tone leather arm rests and these gorgeous wood trims. At under R4k for the doorcards, I simply had no choice. Just the wood trims are advertised over $1000 on eBay if you can find any.

Safe and sound after a convoluted and dodgy shipping process:

It took well over a week to get these fitted. There were so many broken/unglued clips, loose vapour barriers and bodged wires to deal with, but well worth the effort at the end. I even did the lightest spot of sound deadening which has reduced the vibrations from the surprisingly good sound system.

It is amazing what a good bit of wood can do. It feels so much more premium in here now , much better than this nonsense:

I need to start tackling the to-do list:
Paint detail - Ive started on this - its going to come out amazing
Replace drivers door latch - actuator locks, but doesnt unlock
Adjust handbrake
Bonnet struts
Boot struts
Rear shocks
Front air springs
Fluid change
Android head unit
Cluster LCD
Window tint
Sagging rooflining
Sort out peeling/scratched soft-touch plastics

The project we all needed but didn't know we needed. Dream build for me would be a Series 1 Vogue but with M62
