Pretoria - Police officers and lawmen from across Gauteng are bracing for another day of civil unrest in Tshwane after reports of widespread violence overnight.

This follows days of protests in Atteridgeville, Soshanguve, Mamelodi, Hammanskraal and Mabopane after the announcement of Thoko Didiza as the ANC’s mayoral candidate for the sprawling metro.

On Tuesday busses were torched and police were stretched thin to quell mass looting of malls and shops owned by foreign nationals in the townships.

A well-placed police source, who could not be named as he is not authorised to the speak to the press, described the situation in the city’s outlying districts overnight as “chaos”.

“The radio has been going mad all night and all of Pretoria is using one channel so things can be coordinated. The controllers are not even reading normal complaints over the air, it is just violence and looting everywhere,” he said.

He said that looting and gunfire had been reported in various sections of Soshanguve, with officers reporting that they had come under fire in Soshanguve Extension 4.

Unconfirmed reports from Mabopane overnight suggest that houses had been set ablaze and spaza shops owned by foreigners were looted.

Reports of several salvos of gunfire in the area also surfaced.

On Tuesday the ANC stood firm on their assertion that Didiza, who hails from KZN, would be their mayoral candidate.

Responding to the violent backlash, Ministers in the Security Cluster pinned the blame on rogue elements of criminals and vowed to act decisively in response.

The cluster told journalists in a press briefing that police officers from Gauteng had been deployed to flashpoints and that reinforcements from other provinces had yet to be called in.

Top ANC brass are expected to hold branch meetings across the city today in an effort to resolve the issue.

Mabopane shops burnt, looted
2016-06-22 00:14

The unrest plaguing Mamelodi and Attridgeville has spread to Mabopane on Tuesday evening. A number of shops have been looted and several set alight.

This afternoon a group of protesters used live ammunition while trying to break into a shopping mall in Mamelodi on Tuesday, police said.

Someone shot at the padlock at the locked entrance to the mall, Colonel Noxolo Kweza said.

After nightfall looting of especially foreign owned shops and arson attacks intensified.

By 23:15 Tshwane fire services were on the scene according to reports on Twitter, but several shops burnt to the ground.

Earlier foreign-owned shops were looted in Atteridgeville and 19 Autopax buses were burnt during the protests that started on Monday.

The unrest followed the ANC's decision to name Thoko Didiza as the party's Tshwane mayoral candidate for the August 3 local government elections.

Pretoria - A group of protesters used live ammunition while trying to break into a shopping mall in Mamelodi on Tuesday, police said.

Someone shot at the padlock at the locked entrance to the mall, Colonel Noxolo Kweza said.

"We immediately responded and the crowds dispersed," she said.

She was responding to rumours that police used live ammunition on residents.

"We hear that there are reports that we are using live bullets. That is not true."

Foreign-owned shops were looted in Atteridgeville and 19 Autopax buses were burnt during the protests that started on Monday.

The unrest followed the ANC's decision to name Thoko Didiza as the party's Tshwane mayoral candidate for the August 3 local government elections.

Pretoria - Shells of what used to be commuter buses are lined up in the streets of Mamelodi as residents strip them for scrap metal.

This is what can be seen in one of the photographs of Tshwane taken from a helicopter around 17:00 on Tuesday, following violent protests against the ANC's nomination of its mayoral candidate.

There appeared to be few police officers present as fires continued to burn along the roads.

In Atteridgeville, the entrance to a Shell garage was blocked. Large groups of residents were gathered along the roads.

People are really stupid. :YesNo:

Unfortunately, nobody listens to them so they resort to Burning and destroying things in order to get heard.

If everyone had that mentality we would be fuc.... Like we kinda are at the moment.

I just don't understand the whole rioting for services/goods and then the next day complaining again about not having services/goods because you just broke it down or burnt it...

Drove through it yesterday and it was not fun at all.

There is no need for such unlawful behavior. I have nothing against people protesting to have their opinions heard but when it turns into a violent riot and others are put in danger it annoys the shht out of me. All of those fukrs should be arrested. :smashScreen:

Yes it is till going on.
Brummer and N17 is blocked this morning. From what I hear Waltloo is looking bad as well. I don't think it is as bad as yesterday. Should be calming down during the day I hope.

Don't want another noisy night

Does anybody know if it is still going on?

Still going on. Affecting Hatfield businesses, and I believe Rosslyn plants are all shut down? Have not seen confirmation though.

All of this and The ANC has the nerve to "Distance themselves from Blame" and as per the news on 94.7 this morning say that it is to blame on Gangsters and Opposition Parties that are inciting the protests. Well lets just say I am not surprised. The people that lost their lives in the struggle would be turning in their graves because the ANC today is not the what they fought for. Corruption and Greed is the New Mandate for them.

I'm sorry but this is no longer a protest, it's violent and criminal activity. Where are the police when this looting happens? Intelligence agency is just useless as well.

Yes because this type of action definitely has a direct link to protesting against the nominated candidate for your ward.

WTF:RedNo::RedNo:

Reminds me of the London riots a few years ago. Started off because of the shooting of an individual by police and turned into a free for all looting session. As if the stealing of a flat screen TV would in some way drive home the point that the public were deeply angered by the shooting of Mark Duggan.
