One of the big reason was cost. The M8 is still selling at quite a premium which is just a bit out of my price range unfortunately. As much as I love M cars, I am probably not going to be owning one again any time soon. As for the spec, the spec on the 8 is miles ahead of that on the 5 disappointingly. Bowers and Wilkins sound, Merino leather vs Dakota leather, seat heating and ventilation, the seats are a massive upgrade on the 5, from what I've researched the sound (even from outside so not the synth sound being piped into the car) is significantly more "sporty" on the 8 versus the 5. Something I'll do when I have spent some time with the 8 is do the direct comparison (fairly, or unfairly), between the two. Suffice it to say that I think for what BMW charged for the M550i, I think they short changed customers to a degree in standard trim.
