JHB is awesome this time of the year.

Its quiet and you can enjoy the malls and Xmas shows

thats exactly what the mall robbers also think

with the annual spike in mall and business robberies around Xmas, I tend to avoid malls totally at this time of year

and

I haven't seen the sea in over 6 years now, finances are very tight, bread and cuppa-soup time, my next step is to go to the sea permanently, preferably Swakopmund

now what where those correct Lotto numbers again ?

Personally, I won't swim on the SA coastline..... the water quality is shocking these days. My family Dr in Hillcrest was an avid surf ski paddler. Nicked his leg working in the garden on the Saturday. Went for a paddle on the Sunday from Vetches Pier to the Umgeni river mouth and back and by the following Sunday, was in hospital with organ failure. Somehow managed to survive but hasn't been back in the water since.

This has no direct link to the water, might have been contaminated gardening tool he used or many many many other factors unless there are other people who went into the water and have the symptoms this seems like an unrelated isolated incident.

depends where...certain places are pretty bad but we have lots of gems :=):

Always depends. Garden Route coastlines don't see nearly as much traffic as western (CT) and eastern (KZN) coastlines. The beaches here in the Garden Route have never been dirty. I must say it looks like it will be emptier this year compared to when I was here 2 years ago.

The rivers these days are sewers. They are sewers because a great many sewerage reticulation works are not operated properly and raw sewerage is dumped into the rivers.

But hey, I didn't say y'all mustn't swim in the sea did I? I just said there's no way I will :=):

The one thing I can say is it is more busy here in Mosselbay as when I got here a few months ago. The neighborhood has gone to @#$ as instead of the quietness I got use to in falling asleep while listening to the sea as it hits the shores is now gone...... it is like JHB has moved here. It is bikes racing at night, car alarms going off. It is horrible when you got to experience the beauty of this side of the country.

Just sad that people come here with their own ideas of how to enjoy their holiday's. But hey, they leaving again in a few weeks so then it will be beautiful again.

And let me not start with the driving part......L, GP, NC, EC all of them :rage:

I won’t be travelling to the coast, already here. Moved to the EC, 17 years ago from JHB
So, no need to travel. Was quite for 10 years, but it is now, getting too busy, time to find a smaller village.

Me too, I do not see the fun in going to swim in someone else's crap and pee.

It has been a tough year for everyone. Guys are not getting bonuses (or if they do are getting small ex gratia payments). The hard times 'they' spoke about since 2008 are now hitting the higher regions of the middle class IMHO. Today I get my 4th appointment letter in 3.5 years at the same company.

There is no stability anywhere, even at places you would perceive to be 'good' from the outside. Guys in worse situations have school fees to pay and debts piling up and in even worse situations are being retrenched. My wife has had to retrench several staff in the past week as funding has dried up on the studies she works on. The days of being able to pretend things are ok are over. I think many are taking a different approach and making the best they can realistically.

Back to the topic at hand, Durban is not a holiday for me. Family and friends take up a lot of time. Service is nonexistent. I usually take an extra week of "real" holiday to make up for it.

Cape Town done properly (ie eating at good restaurants, staying at nice hotels) is expensive. Not more expensive than a 10 day trip to the Seychelles, but I'd pay the little bit extra (relatively) and have a relatively exotic holiday. Certainly next year I will be taking this approach and going on a 'big' overseas holiday as opposed to visiting the coast with either no water or water that you can't swim in.

Nor can I, which is why I will never enjoy the Durban coastline.

Luckily it's not that bad where I am.
