Number of South Africans visiting the seaside has dropped
11 December 2017 3:40 PM

CEO of Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (Fedhasa), Tshifhiwa Tshivengwa, says the numbers of South Africans visiting the coastal areas for the festive season are lower than the previous years.

Tshivengwa says many of the association's members have expressed concern over lower levels of bookings for the season.

He says the numbers are attributed to the state of the currency, low economic growth and the fact that more and more people are taking more care of their finances.

Tshivengwa urges South Africans to take a look at the specials that Fedhasa members have put out and book to go on holiday.

He says when the hotels are booked they are able to sustain jobs and boost the industry.

To hear more from Fedhasa and the reason why South Africans don't travel, listen below:

Predicts hotel staff burning down houses of Air B&B owners for taking their business... :fencelook:

On a different note though, the fight for survival is real. If every last penny counts, and value for money is considered, then CPT and KZN has little to offer.

Especially taking into account how cheap Phuket, Bali and Mauritius has become.

The last few times I have gone to South Coast the beaches were in a terrible state so I see no reason to waste the petrol to go there again.

RSA economy is going downhill fast. If something doesn’t happen soon, lack of holiday makers at the coast is going to be the least of our worries.
But hey, that’s just my humble opinion

:withStu: its cheaper to travel to one of these places than it is locally - something is very wrong, Plus the fact every year this time they put up the cost of fuel :dunnoanymore:

You guys are a bunch of moaners and groaners
Shame on you

When is the last time you heard the Zuptas moan about the state of the local economy and how holidays have become expensive.

I'm very doubtful that those islands mentioned are cheaper than going to a local coastal city.

I agree, I thought Mauritius was ridiculously expensive. S.A is cheaper and has way more to offer. To compound matters the exchange rate makes us look like paupers when travelling abroad

100%

Apart from the travel meals and drinks, entrance fees etc are ridiculous.

I wanted to travel to Mauritius this December, 2 adults and 2 kids for 7 nights was anything from 80k to 120k.

I'm heading to Zimbali instead for way less.

This has been the trend for a while now.

People are finding it hard financially these days.

Someone seriously needs to take control of this country and get it back on track

Not sure how prices for the Close by islands stack up but last year's trip to the Maldives was quite a lot.. Next year is California, so that USD/ZA exchange scares my bank account :fencelook: I try to go overseas every 2 years, been Blessed enough to have been able to that. :praise:

I actually decided I want to go away next week and Easily got last minute accommodation at the Coast.. Places are relatively empty for this Hectic Season..
