Now that I’ve created a thread for the F30, its time to introduce the garage queen / problem child to the forum, My BSM 2019 M140i LCI Shadow Edition.
Having owned the 8Y RS3, I was desperate to go back to the BMW stable. The Audi was the quickest car I had owned, but as I mentioned, I felt it didn’t suit my needs in a way. I got easily bored of it compared to the M240i. Initially, I was looking at an F80 M3 Comp and I even came so close to buying one until a drove my uncle’s G80 Xdrive which is what put me off getting an F8X.
Then one day on my neighbourhood group, a fully spec’d out low mileage M140i appeared for sale at what seemed to be a “too good to be true” price. The guy needed to let it go as he was relocating, which kind of made sense with regards to his price. I immediately took a friend with me to go view it and it was the exact same spec I wanted in an M140i before I got my M240i back in 2018. Took It for a mandatory test drive and It drove perfectly at the time. I decided to bite the bullet and take her.

Now, I mentioned that this car seemed to be a bargain at first, only to encounter a few issues down the line. I was so excited about buying it that I hadn’t done its mandatory checks. For starters, it hadn’t been serviced in a whole year. I immediately booked it in only to find a few more issues. Oil filters, spark plugs, fuel pump and the Valve cover had to be replaced. I nonetheless decided to pay the price and sort all these things out to bring the car back to its former glory. It could have definitely been a lot worse if I didn’t book it in and have them dig around.
Many would think that the M140i is a downgrade compared to the RS3. Yes, the RS3 was a newer car, more than double the price, it was more powerful, and it got off the line better being quattro. But this M140i is the car I definitely enjoy driving a lot more compared to the RS3. Despite all that I had to do maintenance wise to it, it was well worth it in the end and its brought back that excitement I had whenever I use to drive my M240i.
In comparison to the M240i, it’s more or less the same car, except this is more practical. Having owned both, I still think the M240i was a better looking car and I found it to be a bit more sporty. However if I had to pick between the two, I’d still stick with the M140i. Reason being is that it’s the last of its kind, a rear wheel drive inline-6 hot hatch. Its also a very difficult car to find these days, especially the higher spec ones like this, because most of them are the ex JMPD cars with barely any extras, known as the police spec. So from a resale perspective, its definitely the car to own over the M240i I had. I doubt it will ever reach the same collector status as the 1M, but its got the potential to definitely be something special in the future. I can see myself keeping this car long term wise.
I never really got the chance to mod the M240i since I owned it from new and still had warranty on it. But with this one, I definitely will do the things I never got to do with that one. I plan on definitely going stage 2 on this one, either BM3 or a custom tune, a downpipe, midpipe, a set of intakes. So far I’ve done TU fuel pump upgrade, few interior OEM interior mods and PPF which is a must for any black car.
