Sad to hear Mike,

maybe its time for the 3.0d swap.... :smilebounce:

This would be great but not very cost effective, you need the motor, gearbox, ECU and 2x diffs :thumbdo:

But would pull like a freakn steam-train :smilebounce:

So, a final update on this before I put this Journal to bed for a while.

I had a meeting with Walter at BMW SMG Tygervalley yesterday to discuss my options. I also spoke to Johannes, the foreman at SMG Canal Walk, as well as Gavin and several technicians that have worked on these motors.

The plan moving forward looks like this:

1. The vehicle will go into storage, in storage I will pull the motor.
2. BMW SMG Canal Walk will come out and inspect the motor to give me a final verdict.
3. A used Single or Twin Turbo Motor will be purchased, I am told it needs to be a 2009 N47 if I decide to go single turbo as the block and head will be the same as my current motor, everything else just gets swapped over.
4. SMG Tygervalley has agreed that I can bring them the used motor, on a stand. They will replace all belts, tensioners, pulleys, timing chain, HPFP and ancillaries with OEM parts, thus, giving the replacement motor a 2 year warranty, it breaks, BMW pays.
5. The motor will be re-fitted, it will remain untouched otherwise in order to maintain the warranty. We are still confirming if it must be refitted by BMW RE the parts warranty.

My timeline is around 3-4 months.

BMW SMG Tygervalley inspected my new MINI yesterday and gave it 10/10. The used car dealer replaced all 4 shocks with Bilstein, new top mounts, new ARB rubbers and serviced it for me, besides the driveshafts that have a bit of a vibration (new shafts being fitted today) MINI SMG cannot fault the car, so I am hoping it will be reliable while the BMW is off the road.

I do realise, asking the unreliable step child of the BMW family to be reliable is a joke, but hey, what option do I have.

I would like to take the time to say a MASSIVE thank you to BMW SMG Canal Walk and Century City. Especially to Johannes on the BMW side and Dylan on the MINI side. These two gentleman are absolutely unbelievable and despite my cars only seeing them for servicing have gone out of their way to help me diagnose, to drive the cars and to make sure my cars are always looked after.

Say what you want about the dealer network, but there are gems out there.

Very sorry to read this update.. I enjoyed your threads, for all the work you put in to have this happen.. :dunnoanymore:

It does prove to me that my position on BMW engines is correct, 6cyl are the better options. After our rough time with the latest 3 cyl too my mind is pretty made up.

Think hard if all the costs are worth it.. My 2c! All the best!

Is this a common issue on N47 diesels? Everyone raves about 320D reliability which makes this occurrence on your vehicle seem somewhat intriguing?

What you've done with this car is mind boggling, I don't know of a single other person who has done such extensive offroading in a X1

Hi Everyone,

Quick update and a discussion point I would like some opinions on. The current situation:

Motor Out
Dont know if valves are bent yet
Swings but does not start

This leaves me in a situation because:

There are no N47S second hand motors to replace mine with if it bent valves
The cause of the failure cannot be fixed so it will fail again
Resale Value loss due to Rebuilt or Replacement Motor

Trade is R170k, Retail R188k. My settlement is R200k.

I have been in discussion with MFC about surrendering the car, now this may seem like a odd step but let me explain my logic.

1. The car swings, so its considered a runner at auction, any bidder will not know the extent unless they know the car so there is a chance it will still fetch a decent price. Its not nice, but its the risk of an auction car.
2. Sales on auction are pure sold as is. If I repair and sell the car its my risk for 6 months, if I trade the car in I have to declare the engine work. I will not be able to fully wash my hands of it like I would in an auction sale by the bank.
3. If I sell the car I have the loss incurred in the repair itself, the loss of the resale due to the repair and I have a shortfall still and the grey area of what the resale will be when I can break even on it.
4. I am in to lose R100k on this car either way I look at it beyond the money already paid towards it and mods etc.

Surrendering the car leaves me with no repair bill and a possible shortfall of R50-100k depending on what it fetches at auction. It gets the car off my driveway and out of my life, it takes my risk and reduces it to nil. I can finance the shortfall and because its a willing surrender there will be no judgement, its seen as a re-finance / negotiation of the terms of the agreement.

The car has stood for 3-4 months now, mostly because of sentiment of someone else working on it and because I dont want to work on it unless I have the cash, now that I am over the sentiment and have some cash, looking at it logically, its a problem I want rid of, this seems like a good way.

I would sooner pay R100k in shortfall to the bank than R30-50k to repair it, then still have to insure it, maintain it (I dont need it I have the MINI) and then still probably sit with that shortfall in a year or two when I want to sell it cos its a high mileage X1 with a new or fixed motor.

Choices. :sorry:

Sorry again about the car Mike...not nice.

If it was mine I would obviously repair it since I got (the time)...but only if its my own car then I wont feel rushed :smilebounce:

Your last paragraph makes sense if all things considered. Sell it to reduce as much of the outstanding debt. But pre-arrange this with the finance company.

It is not an easy situation, especially given I am over the sentiment.

I want to wash my hands of it and either way I WILL lose out, so best I can do is rack it up to school fee's and in 2-3 years time, I wont remember it at all and life can go on as usual.

I am still on the fence, still deciding. I can try sell it (once fixed) for under retail (due to the motor history) and just pay in to settle the bank, its all relative to what the repair cost is, but I am weighing up the options.

Personally, I would love to see the back of it as a matter of urgency, the ownership experience has turned sour, its not a hindrance to me. :dunnoanymore:

How does one classify a running car, my understanding from previous auctions is that I am allowed to start the car prior to auction to hear for any noises from engine and gearbox? If the car swings only, does that classify as running?

I found the below on https://www.arrivealive.mobi/buying-vehicles-at-an-auction

which states the following:
This Act requires from the auction centre to fulfil certain obligations including:

The display of any faults of the car in writing for the public to view. Even faults like a noisy engine should be displayed to the public.
Prohibiting an auctioneer from knowingly misrepresenting the value, composition, structure, character, quality or manufacture of the goods put up for sale at an auction.
Affording consumers a reasonable period of time and opportunity to inspect the goods on offer prior to the commencement of an auction. [No fee may be charged for such opportunity.]

Will the issue with the motor be displayed? How would this affect the auction amount?

I wish I could answer.

My plan is to confirm if it bent valves or not, if it has I will surrender it as is and take the hit. If the valves are fine and its just a chain, I will repair it and surrender it running. The ONLY reason I would surrender it is to wash my hands of it cleanly, I am too honest to sell a car that snapped a chain to someone, rather it go on auction where I know nothing of it or the buyer.

At the end of the day, the bank owns the car, its their risk as much as it is mine - My risk is that it explodes, which it did, their risk is that I make it their problem, its fair game.

It all boils down to the numbers. My MINI is also up for sale, frankly, I have had enough of shoddy BMW Group Engineering.

If I buy another, it will have plan and I will be the worst service customer imaginable - Sentiment for cars is a horrible thing, I will never repeat that mistake again.

Looking for a private BMW mechanic to work on my BMW X1.

The current RMI approved fully fledged and reputable workshop has had the car for 4 weeks, wasting my time and money and not confirming if it bent valves or not - When I ask them to remove the engine I get told "its too difficult we refuse to do it".

I just need to confirm if it bent valves or not, so I know if its fixable or not, its urgent, and I have run out of patience, it can be flat-bedded to said mechanic within 24 hours.

Any help would be appreciated - NO WORKSHOPS, I want a private guy who will put the work in and get the job done.

Thank you.

Quick update, so the chain didnt snap. Its there, and motor turns, no visible engine damage.

Its been at the workshop (RMI approved and very reputable) for over 4 weeks, they dont know why it wont start.

This car is f*cking with me.

Well, luckily not the catastrophic failure you thought, so that’s great news.

Hopefully the mech will find the fault soon and get it sorted.

Holding thumbs for a more cost friendly repair than anticipated so that you can get rid of the car without taking too much of a financial knock.
