Alex the 2005 530d

Hey guys,
Haven't posted one of these threads in a while, but since a Fanatic previously owned this car, it was already part of the forum.

As some of you know, a 530d was for sale recently, and I got the diesel itch. 😛

After a bit of negotiating, a deal was concluded, and I booked my flight to JHB to collect.
I collected late Friday evening and was ready to hit the road the following morning, back to Durban.

On the way from JHB to PTA to sleep over at my parents' place for the evening:

Only photo I took en route to KZN:

I soon realized the car had some boosting issues. The car would go into boost, and all power would disappear. This was intermittent and would come and go. But the car managed 6.2 L/100 km on the way home. Genuinely impressive and so far happy with my purchase, bar the boosting issues.

I booked the car in at a local workshop I have a good relationship with, and they found the issue and did some general maintenance for me.

The following was done:
  • Bottom boost pipe was replaced
  • Vacuum pipes replaced
  • Exhaust manifold replaced (old one was cracked)
  • Exhaust manifold gasket and turbo mounting to manifold gasket
  • Downpipe (Decat)
  • EGR delete
I collected the car and was over the moon with the drive home. Power was back to normal, and I was ready to hit the open road again.
I ordered a Linux screen online to update the interior a bit.

Installation took me an hour; it was straightforward. With this, I ordered the aux cable as well. But couldn't get it working in time. Seems a bit of coding is needed, but more on this later.

Screen installed:

My wife and I decided to do a trip down the coast to Cape Town for my birthday. The iX3 wouldn't make it without a proper route planned, and the M135 is firm and thirsty. Let's be honest, I was trying to think of a reason to embrace the open road in the old 5'er 😇

We did a single drive back to KZN from CT, 1650km in one day. Although a very long route, it was a stunning drive, and the old 5'er took it in its stride.

In modern life with all the new tech and driving assist on all cars, I loved every second of our 4000km holiday in this old lady. I convinced myself again that new cars aren't needed. I would almost go so far as to say that this 5'er is more comfortable than our iX3, and it's actually rapid for 160 kW odd.

Things to do:

  • As I mentioned, I need coding to get the AUX working. This, in turn, prevents Bluetooth from working on the new Linux screen. I have a friend with all the cables and apps to code. I will get it done through the course of the week.
  • The car is booked in on Wednesday for another check-up, after the long trip and a stage 1 tune with the guys from ED Tuning.
  • I love the clear windows, but I can't deal with the sun. 35% smash&grab is on the cards
  • The car is booked next week with Colorglo Umhlanga for a proper interior valet.
  • The car has no paint, and I don't want to paint it. But I need to make a plan with the stone chips. I'll find a solution to this.
  • PDC is intermittent. Need to get this fixed. I want to add a reverse camera as well.
I don't know how long I'll keep her, but for now, I'm in love. 😍

Thanks for reading my thread.

Epic roadtrip, probably one of the most comfortable cars for such an adventure, congrats and thanks for sharing!

I 100% agree with you on the window tint, once you have a car with tint, you cant go back...

Congratulations bud! Was hoping this went to another fanatic! Wish you many many more happy kms seeing as you covered over 4000 already :giggle:

Like how the previous owner failed to mention the list of faults in the sale ad.💩

From what I read there was one "intermittent" fault. The rest seems to be maintenance which one would expect on a 21 year old car?

Ahh, comments from the peanut gallery early in the AM.. Gotta love it :)

Imagine buying a multiple owner old BMW and expecting it to be faultless, oh wait.

@gumpertapolloss what a car for a road trip of epic proportions! Wishing you many miles of smiles in the cruiser.

mmm... 530d e60 ... M57 engine ...

The car was priced well and the owner is not in country much, as he stated in the ad also.

Cars sitting nad not being driven for a while can bring any issues especially when it is a diesel and older vehicle.
intermittent faults and touch-ups, fixes that you will do when you start to drive it so much again after it being a garage potato is the norm when buying these cars and this model too.
To be honest, I think even at asking price still left enough room to play to get these niggles fixed after ownership.

We might be seeing this differently.

I bought a 21-year-old car, sight unseen. I trusted a fellow fanatic whom I met in person before, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

We negotiated a good price, and I didn't expect a brand new car. The money I negotiated off the selling price was used for general and preventive maintenance.

I'm in a privileged position where I was able to pull up the full history of this car, including HPI reports, insurance history, etc. It all checked out.

If you can find a nice example like this for 100k odd, I urge you to do it! Even with a bit of maintenance, I have zero regrets.

Congrats on the diesel train.
The trip must have been lovely in the 530d. I did the same trip in Jan this year and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

This post proves how ICE > EV. (I'm gonna get some swearing for this) :p
I've been closely reading and monitoring the diesel price thread on the forum.

Owning an EV for the past two years and doing a 4,000 km road trip at current diesel prices, I feel I have a bit of insight into this.

In town, nothing will beat the EV. We have owned the car for the past two years, and in that time we have driven about 22,000 km. I've completed numerous trips from KZN to PTA and even to Limpopo, as we have a farm there. The N3 is a joy due to the extensive charging infrastructure. It's my wife's daily, and the EV inspires so much confidence in a lady, which, I would say, adds to the sense of safety. I charge the car at the BMW dealer for free, and we have almost R3000 left on our complimentary "R10000 voucher" from when we first got the car after 2 years. For me to drive from KZN to PTA costs about R500-R530 in charging, and the time spent charging is about 40-45minutes.

Our trip recently cost about R8300 in diesel for 4000km. I had a few instances where diesel was sold out, and once found, I was paying about R31.00/L. With the lovely fuel economy we were getting, I never had any fears as I kept topping up at half tank. Unfortunately, the EV can't give me this peace of mind, and diesel is still superior in this regard. I still believe that if the charging infrastructure were there, I would have saved a lot compared to current diesel prices. We usually get about 400-420km on a single charge; a basic calculation indicates that I would have stopped 10 times for charging, which causes a bit of an inconvenience as well.

Ideal world, two-car garage. ICE for long-distance and big trips, EV for everyday commute.

I totally agree with the two-car garage. Our first long trip with my son's Jaguar E-Pace the day after he got it, driving from Sandton down to CT via Mossel Bay, we had to wait about three hours at Kroonstad (charger was faulty - charged on one phase only iirc) for the car to charge enough so we could get to Bloem for our first stop-over. If the charge station at the Bloem Casino was 100 meters further, we would not have made it. The charging is not too bad if you are not in a hurry as it is nice to take a break every two hours or so. The next morning first charge of the day at Colesberg where we had breakfast and second charge at Graaff Reinet where we had early lunch. The stretch to George was hectic as the distance was about 315 km iirc and the range was about 320kms. We were getting worried along the way as we had a head wind and the range dropped drastically. We eventually cruised at 100 and then later down to 80 kph. We diverted Knysna and went over some dirt road pass near Knysna to save some distance. Charged again at Knysna Mall and got a bite to eat and after charging we left for Hartenbos for our stay over. Next day trip to CT via Hermanus was uneventful. That was back in 2021. We did a round trip in January this year in my 530d GT and drove about 4000kms with diesel cost of about R6k. It was really nice to not worry about charging along the way and filling up taking about 10 minutes each time! Great also was one could stick to the speed limit and not worry about range.Cannot remember the charging cost back then but for the plus/minus 2000kms we did in the Jag the cost was about R2000 iirc. (Getting old now - memory not that good anymore!) So, the two car garage is a winner- horses for courses!
