M140i - Engine Rebuild/Swap

Hi all. So on Saturday I had an issue with my car that forced me to immediately stop the car when I got the drivetrain error. I won't go into detail on what happened on this post but for those who are interested you can read up on what happened here: https://www.babybmw.net/threads/m14...1/?post_id=1779369&nested_view=1#post-1779369

The guys at BMW Midrand updated me and told me that the engine is dead and I would need R380k to replace the entire motor. A bit much if you ask me but I undestand that figure as they are in the business of replacing not repairing.

However after some extensive research based on the report I got from BMW Midrand it seems like it could be a bad fuel injector which could have also potentially caused piston damage. Based on reading on other forums and groups, it seems like a common issue on 2016/2017 plate M140i's but it also seems like an issue that can be fixed by replacing the damaged piston and replacing the bad fuel injector.

At this point I'm just weighing my options on if whether I should get it repaired, forged or replaced. I wanted to find out if there's anyone you guys can recommend to do one of the jobs who is knowledgable on these B58 engines or at the very least modern BMW engines.

Sorry to hear about misfortune. Out of interest was the car stock?

Chatting with the OP, car is stock seems it cracked a piston on cylinder 6, very common on the B58

Sorry about this incident bud, I do feel for you. Do you have warranties in place?

Unfortunately, all your options are expensive. You would need to strip and inspect it and take it from there. I would budget a minimum of R100k - R150k for a rebuild outside of a non-franchise dealer. I would be surprised if you can get away with spending less than that.

If you're keeping the car, you might as well go forged.
Edit: Posts like this scare me away from driving something fast and expensive, especially out of plan. I got a quote from BMW for an engine for our 2020 Mini Cooper S (B48), fitted the price was R240k. So that price from them sounds about right for your car.

BMW had a recall campaign for the B58 to reprogram the DME in order to avoid damage from poor quality fuel. A broken piston #6 is the most common failure from running full throttle on poor quality fuel.

It would be interesting to know if this DME reprogramming work was done on the car.

I think some of these issues were fuel pump related too. Guys have installed the TU pump as a fix.

Yes that’s correct, the bmw I-step update dropped the boost from 4500rpm.

The quality of our pump fuel is getting worse by the day. The stock HPFP also bombs out hence most guys upgrade to the TU HPFP

Yes I do have a warranty in place which hopefully will cover the bill. Worst scenario I go 50/50 with them which is still relatively better than forking out R380k for a new motor. I considered going forged however I don't plan to keep the car very long given what happened to it. I understand they are built tough but from this point forward anything that can go wrong possibly will.

Very common on *stock* B58? I thought these motors had a solid reputation in terms of reliability?
Seems like the issue I'm experiencing was fixed in the 2018+ gen 1 B58s. So only 2016/2017 plate cars have this issue. But it's also just the luck of the draw, some guys have done high mileage on their cars without so much as an issue and others, like me, have had these failures.

Have you had the injectors tested to confirm that #6 is faulty and was really the cause of the cracked piston?

Here is a video of a guy in US who strips failed engines. The B58 in this video had the same broken piston #6 but it appears to have ingested water and hydro-locked since the conrod on #5 was also bent.

Yo - firstly really sorry this happened to you - especially on a stock motor. Curious to know how one can tell if you have a gen 1 motor - I have a 2018 model M140i - prod in June 2018. But would be nice to see it somewhere.

Your M140i has a Gen 1 B58 but because it was manufactured in 2018 you should be fine as they fixed the fuel injector issue.
