2020 M8 Gran Coupe Competition

Hey Gents,
Bit of a delayed post, but here we go! Back in July, I made a move I honestly didn’t see coming, I bought a 2020 M8 Gran Coupe Competition. Totally unexpected because I wasn’t even in the market for one!

Here’s how it happened:
A buddy of mine had his heart set on my G20 M340i. I was still loving that car and wasn’t planning to sell. For the money, I still think the M340i is one of the best all-rounders out there, seriously, such a stunning package.

But… long story short, I sold it to him and started hunting for a G80.

Cue the search: endless browsing, dealer visits, and a few headaches.
  • My G20 was loaded with features, so the next car had to tick those boxes.
  • The G80s in my budget were either missing laser lights or weren’t xDrive.
  • Interior on the pre-LCI G80 felt too similar to the G20. Hard to justify spending 3x the money for what felt like the same cabin.
  • LCI 1 (with extended screens) was close in price to pre-LCI but slightly out of budget.
  • LCI 2 was closer to LCI 1 pricing, which made zero sense.
Bottom line: G80 pricing wasn’t sitting lekker with me, so I decided to wait it out. (Prices still haven’t changed, especially for xDrive versions!)

Looked around at the M5s. Many Pre LCI’s around within budget (Most out of plan or hardly any plan). The LCI M5 would have been my first pick but again out of my budget.

Fast forward a few days. I stumble across an M8 Comp that checks every box:
✅ 4 doors (wife does not like 2 door cars, and honestly, long doors in tight spaces are a pain for me)
✅ Packed with extras
✅ Looked absolutely gorgeous in pics
✅ Within budget (thank you, big-car depreciation!)

I was heading to a party near the dealer that weekend, so I popped in for a look. The car was immaculate inside and out. What sealed the deal? Full-body PPF from new, so that Black Sapphire paint was popping! The PPF showed some age, but underneath was mint.
Negotiated a bit on price, got new tires all around, and insisted on sending it to my BMW dealer of choice for inspection, motorplan transfer, and extension. They agreed. Dealer gave me the all-clear, and boom. Deal done. Picked her up and couldn’t be happier.

So here she is:
2020 F93 M8 Competition Gran Coupe
Exterior: Black Sapphire Metallic
Interior: Full Merino Leather in Sakhir Orange
Wheels: 20" Star-spoke style 813M

Some of the lekker features:
M Sport exhaust system (still wish it had M Performance exhaust… R150k though!)
Comfort Access & soft-close doors
BMW Display Key
Rear & side blinds
Heated seats front and rear
Driving Assist Professional
BMW Laserlight
Parking Assist Plus
Connected Package Professional
Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound
Live Cockpit Professional
Shadow Line with extended contents
M Carbon ceramic brakes
Active seat ventilation (front)
BMW Night Vision
M Carbon exterior package
M Driver’s Package
M Competition package

Congrats, these have all depreciated so nicely that if you're in the market for one it's becoming compelling - also avoids the hooligan ownership of m2/3/4 so you can be somewhat more comfortable with the purchase!

Congratulations 👏
Epic car.
Keen to see your updates

(How does an Australian call for the bill?
Cheque, mate 😉)

Thats a good one ill remember that :ROFLMAO:

Doubt there will be much updates. Everything on the M8 is 5 times the average cost. Simple front spoiler is 20k. I Would really like the M Perf exhaust but at 150k its abit steep. Thats probably the only thing i would like to do.

I Agree, I was also told you less likely to get hijacked or car stolen since these are rare its easy to spot. These arnt in demand.
Hopefully its true :ROFLMAO: either way my insurance forced me to get early warning tracker.

Congratulations once again. These are incredible value particularly considering what they cost new. You're likely going to keep this one for a long time to come.

You can come hear my exhaust - knowing BMW it's probably the same LOL. It's the thing that made me want to buy my F90 since it does add to the experience. 150K is still hard to stomach.

P.S. welcome to the "My next upgrade is going to have to cost over R5M" club - it's major diminishing returns from this point on

Holy polony, what a stunning bruiser / luxury sports limo - I don’t know what to even call this, there are so few cars that play in this league. Enjoy it - it must be insanely rewarding to drive or to just sit in that cabin and sip on a morning coffee or laté…

I haven’t seen many of these on our roads - I am sure I’ll start noticing it now.

Congrats!

I heard your car at the one event we went to. It sounds perfect. Currently mine is way too quiet inside the car. I have to put the music off when you want to drive abit quick with another car next to you just to hear what RPM you at :ROFLMAO: The M mode Display on the heads up does help but i prefer listening to the RPM on when to change gear.

When i bought my M340i i felt it very boring until i did the M Performance exhaust. It really did change the driving experience.

The M8 does have everything you would want in a car. For a big car its quick. Did Rhino Park and Tarlton timed events and it ran 11.2 back to back with 11.1 best on the quarter mile.

Next car will definitely be a mission...
