For the E39 fans...

This 525i Touring is now getting its third engine. First one dropped a valve, and the second engine overheated (will confirm upon inspection the exact cause and damage). For now, we managed to source another engine to get this baby back on the road.

That wiring harness is endless :slow:

geez.. this is amazing... the 2.5l bmw engine is one of the most bulletproof engines ever. besides for what happens to them if you drive ON when you see the temp gauge going into the red.

I now drive my 2nd e39... love the cars. its my dream to oneday get a touring and fit it with a 530d engine and style 65's

To see a BMW E39 being brought back to life is a moment to savour indeed! Great work and good luck!

On the topic of overheating! I have resolved to carry two litres of water in a container in the boot! I don't know if this is good or bad, but on the occasion the car overheats, I release air gently from the bleeder screw and wait for the pressure and gauge to cool. Usually about 15 minutes.

I then remove the bleeder screw and pour water until it bleeds. Close the radiator and move on. I don't know if this is true, but at low speeds, traffic etc. with the engine running below 2000 rpm, these cars overheat easily.

Or is there an electric fan/switch that should be operating to assist in traffic low speeds?

Hope to see your car running smooth again! BTW, never let a BMW heat gauge hit the red line! Switch off even if there is a remote possibility!

Not really... If your viscous fan clutch is working properly, and also the 2.5's and the 3.0's have a aux pump also... that.. waterpump.. thermostat etc.. all need to be working right.

the thing with the e39 and any car for that matter. the minute the temp needle goes up you put the heater on FULL BLAST on its HOTTEST Setting and immediately stop the car... running the ignition on first click might help a bit as the interior fan will draw some heat away from the heater core which might intern help disperse some heat..

Should be a viscous fan, but many people opt to swap that out for an electric one on the E39's, purely because the viscous one uses a lot of power and makes an E39 sound like a bus going uphill when it comes on.

Thanks for the help understanding that horrid sound! Yes, I know the feeling - sometimes when I take off after idling for a minute, people inside the car think we're being chased by an old Hilux!

Looking forward to seeing the Touring completed!
