Finally picked up my G87 M2

After about 6 months since placing my order, I picked up my M2 this afternoon. Sapphire black, carbon roof, sports seats (not buckets), black rims.

Apologies there are no pics yet, I haven't had time since collecting it but will post some in the next few days.

Couple of interesting things:

1. First service is at 2000km and until then the power is throttled. Full power is only available after the break in service. They couldn't tell me by how much power is unlocked at that stage percentage wise, only that "you will immediately notice the difference in power after the service". In terms of guidance about how much to push the car during the break in period, it was in the vein of "you can DRIVE it - just don't push it excessively". I suppose given the power limit at the moment, you probably cant push the car that much anyway. I've only driven it home since collecting it so haven't even tried pushing it yet.
2. I was advised to let the car idle for 30sec to 1 min after driving it and before switching it off, especially after a "spirited driving session" - something to do with the oil distribution. Apparently this pertains to all M cars.
3. The car has a built in unlimited data sim that some of the apps use, such as the built in maps and so on. You cant connect to it, its hard locked for the car apps only.
4. First car I've been in with a heads up display - I have to say its awesome, an almost surreal experience having the heads up. Like being in a cockpit of an airplane.
5. The tech in cars these days is becoming really something. In this car, for example, you can send someone an electronic key to their phone and they can use their phone to drive your car without the key (works via NFC technology). And then more basic stuff like being able to track your cars location when you're not in it, its status (is it locked, etc.) and so on.
6. Most (maybe every?) feature can be voice controlled.
7. The car came with a couple of gifts - one interesting one was a print of the original drawing of the car signed by the artist. Apparently only the first 100 orders get this. The other gifts were the obligatory cap and also a BMW M tracksuit top. I suppose I should add that you also get a M performance track experience day as well.

Anyway, completely thrilled by the car. Owning an M car was a bit of a bucket list item for me. Now I just need to learn how to drive it.

Great!
I went to have a look at one at the cape town BMW dealer a few days back. They had a red one. I'm still not sold on the looks completely, but it certainly looks better in the metal than it does in pictures, especially the front end - has a proper menacing look. A far, far better designed car than the current M3/4.

The servicing and features are normal on new cars. I couldn't tell you exactly what the % power difference was but JSN gave me a loaner M6 to get it up to 2000km while my F10 was having its clutches done. It indeed felt SIGNIFICANTLY slower than my car was.

You will have to pay in for the services that point 3 unlocks after 2 or 3 years. Just bear in mind that you should wait for the specials that come up for this! BMW usually bundles everything a few times a year and you can buy them all for a few hundred instead of a couple of thousand. I don't really have an issue paying for this since it is map updates, traffic info etc included.

The tech person in me wants to immediately disable the capability of point 5 :ROFLMAO:. I know its all secure etc but I don't even like comfort access from a practical standpoint. There was another person commenting about the home assistant integrations: I am probably old-school in that my car sits in the garage with windows up, locked and armed :ROFLMAO:.

I hope you have a fun filled ownership experience. Polarising looks aside, the capability of these cars is immense, and you will definitely have a huge smile on your face every time you drive it.

Advanced driving courses definitely recommended for the sheer fun, learning about the car and for your own learning. We actually only use a tiny fraction of what these cars are capable of!

Calling a spade a space - the design is, frankly, very peculiar in some respects. There are some colours I simply would not want this car in. For me, sapphire black looks the business. If the F87 was the beauty, the (black) G87 is the beast - and I'm very happy with that.

Thanks for the info and tips regarding point 3, I didn't actually know that I would need to resubscribe for those services later on. I'll keep an eye out for those specials you mention.

Regarding the run-in period, it's a pity the power is reduced but understandable. I havent had the chance to push the car yet, but will certainly see what it can do as soon as I get the chance! 2000km's is going to take like 2 months of normal driving...I guess I'm going to have to plan some long weekend drives to get there sooner.

You're right about the capabilities of the car versus how most people use them. I am one of those people thats guilty of that. On an associated note, I cant relate at all to people who do burnouts and drifting in their car - I just couldnt imagine treating my car that way - even though thats what its designed to be able to do. Maybe I need to lighten up : )

Thanks for your comments, hope you have a great day!

Congrats, wish you many safe and happy miles.

M2 is starting to grow on me, versus the first time I’ve ever seen it.
