discussion F87 M2 Competition Values - talk to me

Hi Guys

A year on from owning my OG M2 LCI and recently having sold it I have an itch developing for an M2 Comp, There are quite a few examples for sale ranging between R750k to R1.1m dependent on mileage and year model.
Im not too concerned getting the latest model year as i don't think there are that many changes between them during the 4 years of its production 2018-2021(educate me if im wrong).
Many on the used car market have a similar spec list as there were not that many boxes to tick when ordering new so not too worried about that either
My question is depreciating values (if any) over the next 2-5 years..
Hypothetically will it be wise move spending close to 900k on a 2018 model with around 50,000km right now? or R800k for a 2019 with +/- 80,000km?
should I hold on to the cash and wait another year, does anyone see them dropping in price in the near future?
I know no one has a magic wand but I also know there are a few excellent calculated risk analyst here and welcome all to shower me with some wisdom

Buy it because you like it not for the investment value. I think that goes for any car these days. If it's special and well looked after it will always have some value to someone.

Also it seems everyone thinks the OG is the one to have (not me though). What made you sell it and what gap do you think the M2 Comp is going to fill?

Predicting prices in this market is a fool's errand. And be careful not to catch syphilis from some of the M2s and M4s currently on the market. Even at inflated prices, some are absolute dogs.

Rising prices on AutoTrader and Facebook Marketplace are not a good indicator of the market. Look at Karsh’s M8: a bargain price with no takers. Or the nice M4 with a special spec attracting nothing but lowballers and "payment plan" chancers. Even my in-plan F90 with R350k in mods: I had two 'cash' offers in the 800s after they spotted my post on Karsh's thread. I’d sooner send it to WBC or Wheelee (which I actually got values from that were far higher).

But I digress, my point is that the actual prices people are willing to pay YOU when the time comes for you to sell are quite low (be it trade or private buyers), unless you're willing to wait months for the right buyer or leaving it on consignment somewhere. Even Porsches are having 200-300K drops in price for some that I've watched for a while.

That being said you have things like my 4C that I expected to take a massive hiding on when I bought it (and I just bought it cos I liked it really) - and it has literally doubled in value even given all my use of it over the years. They are also moving very quickly (except the one absurdly marked at R2M)

As I say, I would love to say any of it makes sense.

We are in a little echo chamber here and I'd guess nobody outside of the BMW community cares about an F87 M2 Comp the way they would a Cayman or Boxter or any one of a number of real sportscars. Within the BMW community you will find the usual peanut gallery full of vibes but empty of wallet and dealers that will literally tell you to send it to WBC.

Is it wise? relative to what? Relative to getting a predictable return in the bank/market? No. Relative to buying lotto tickets and hoping for a jackpot? Yes

TL;DR if I had your itch to scratch I would just buy one now in as good of a condition as I could find and enjoy it

My 2Cents ( see what I did there). I got my M2C a 2018 with 32k km at the time for 920 about 3 years ago and its on 43k now. its been out of warranty for 2 years and I managed to get the front rotors and pads replaced before plan ended which was about R26k so the extension came in handy. Have done oil service and brake fluid since than both because of time and combined under R5k. If you do get one out of plan try get one with brakes done. I haven't driven the OG but did drive the new M2. its a dope car but for me lacked that " I KILL YOU NOW"drive of the M2C. the new one is a dope everyday car but for me the car is a weekend blast type car and I couldn't justify extra R500K. I do see more of the new ones on the road and on auto trader these days..

This is just my opinion but if you're looking for a future valued M car... Try finding a manual m2 comp... They are very scarce so they have more chance of appreciating in value as the years go on

Manual M2 Comp is the one to have, I'd *FAR* rather buy a good car with miles and age than a newer car without. There were essentially no options, so find one you like, wrap it the colour you'd prefer if the paint is in good nick and drive it. I suspect these are close to the bottom of their band of depreciation, and much like E46M3s, for eg, they'll probably stabilize here for a decade before slowly ticking up (but only for the very best examples).

If you have an itch , it must mean you like the look of the newer M2 comp. I initially preferred the look of the OG M2 but the new shape has grown on me and definitely is a sexy car. As others have said, buy the M2 Comp because u like and if it appreciates in value then its a bonus. Manual if you can would be a plus! I think it is still too new for any type of massive change in the current price trajectory but given the 2018s would be out of plan, may be a better option to go for later model on plan. Also depends on whether you are going to daily the car and how much mileage you going to put on. A well maintained older car with proper invoices and proof of work done is much better than buying something newer just cos its newer doesnt always mean its better

@OP worth also considering the aim, if the M2 is a stepping stone towards something better in future and your *HOPE* is it doesn't lose money, then you're better off saving. Find the car you *actually* want. M2s are great drivers cars, but they simply aren't nice enough inside to feel special - the interior feels really little different to an old e87 135i coupe... I think the prices are now hitting the point where they're decent value, but at launch an M2 comp was ~r1.4m back in 2020/2021...

Definitely, il never buy something i dont like, my weekend/sports cars over the years have been the Z4 3.0, Z4MC, an M4, E82 135i and the OG M2, Ive kept the latter 3 for a year each and this was my initial plan, to experience ownership, enjoy each of them for what they are and keep the one i felt had ultimate sweet spot, the Z4MC did have my heart for a while, i never thought i would get rid of it, but i did and now I feel like I want something again that I would keep long term , something with the perfect balance , fairly new tech but and an analog feel.

I get your points and they do make sense , thanks for the input.

Good point! 15 years back it was always about this , getting something better in the future was always the goal, ive settled down a bit now, i think il be content with an M2C for a long time until im in a position to maybe afford an M3 Touring or even an M5CS without financing either.

I just dont wana lose big money on something i can buy next year for 100k less
My aim now is to get something that will appreciate in value over time indeed

Definitely, il never buy something i dont like, my weekend/sports cars over the years have been the Z4 3.0, Z4MC, an M4, E82 135i and the OG M2, Ive kept the latter 3 for a year each and this was my initial plan, to experience ownership, enjoy each of them for what they are and keep the one i felt had ultimate sweet spot, the Z4MC did have my heart for a while, i never thought i would get rid of it, but i did and now I feel like I want something again that I would keep long term , something with the perfect balance , fairly new tech but and an analog feel.

Would a Cayman be too far out of budget? Worth at least going for a drive in one. MIGHT be somewhere in between your Z4MC and M2 Comp in terms of the feel and balance you're after?

hmm i didnt even consider this , i think i should test drive one.
was never a fan of the first gen cayman though, i wouldnt mind the later gens if it were in budget and a non boring drive

Only if you sell me yours!!! was always on my radar but after a few deals falling through i think that ship has sailed , especially when seeing some of the same cars for sale now at +300k more than they were priced 3 years ago, there are a couple for sub 900k but with over 100k kms so will only be keen if service history and maintenance are upto date.
Also i want something with not too many miles that i can enjoy and do long trips with and not be too worried about accumulating more miles.
