100% agree with the above but even rolling it's the driver as well depending on what vehicle it is. As I've said before knowing what RPM to change at with modded 330d's and N54's is crucial. In the video above you can hear the 335i gent holding on to gears too long, modded N54's still running stock turbos and inlets shouldn't be run past 5500-5700rpm as power drops off after that pretty quickly, shifting around this point will give you best performance.

I hear where you coming from and do not dispute that the n54 is a monster of note.
The f30 however is an n55, they also react differently to mods compared to the n54. It is also coupled with the 8speed transmission, granted you have to change at the right point etc however they they are miles ahead in shift speed compared to the step auto and manuals. There is no doubt that this specific car will shock many x35 owners both modded and stock, comparing it to experience with what my much lower powered diesel does.
