E92 M3 at the strip - 29/05/2016

So I decided that, after almost 3 years of ownership, my E92 deserved a trip to a drag strip. Whilst not overly confident in her 1/4 mile abilities, I thought it would be nice to get a benchmark time. Not a lot of prep was done other than semi slicks and some fuel mix. Car was full weight and even had my sound in the car as well. Taking all this into account, I was hoping to finish the day with a minimum mid 13 run as a base line going forward.

Weather looked good for the day, 24 degrees and clear. Morning session was good but mid morning/afternoon, the sun was just killing us and the cars, started cooling off again towards the afternoon though.

I was joined by some of the Durban Fanatics fraternity in the form of Kish, 4Rose and Sanesh, who would be racing with me on the day.

Thus began the journey @ 5:30am. Meet up at BYT HQ, load up the bakkie with our slicks, fuel, jacks ect and it was time to hit the road.

Arrived at the track, sign in, tyre change, last minute adjustments, pressure check then ready for scrutineering.

Ready for the first run.
Do a short burnout or 2 to clean the slicks and get a little heat into them and begin staging. Staged and the light goes green, she gets off the line well with minimal drama, up to 8400rpm, 2nd,3rd and right at the top of 4th gear she crosses the line. The run felt good but I still felt I could be a little more aggressive off the line, cruise into the holding area and time keeper hands me a slip.

I was over the moon to say the least and confidence grew to get her into the 12s in her current state.

As stated earlier the weather got a bit hot, intake temps climbed and so did the times unfortunately. Subsequent runs were 13.1, 13.2, 13.4, all these with varying launches and tyre pressures, as we were trying to play around and see what works and what doesn't, it was, after all, the cars' first time on the strip, my confidence dwindled and I decided to sit out one run and let the car cool properly also to wait for the heat to die down a bit.

On my last run of the day I decided to revert to my setup for the first run of the day and see how things panned out, I was happy with my 13.01 and was preparing myself to accept it as the my best for the day.

Staged and await the green light. Bang, she gets off the line and sails up to 8400rpm gear after gear, flawlessly and crosses the traps once again at the very top of 4th gear. Time keeper hands me the slip and to my surprise...

She'd done it, broke the 12s and kicked a giant monkey off my back that had been sitting there since the mornings first run.

After all was said and done, threw some jacks under the car to put some stock wheels back on, collected our trophies(finished off 3rd in my class... Damn C63s) and made the long trek back home.

All in all a very fun and enjoyable day. This car has blown my mind as I have always treated her as a highway bruiser and she took all my expectations yesterday and told me just where to shove it.

As far as mods go, the car has a make shift decat with the stock Xpipe still in play and performance back boxes, Federal semi slicks on 18" M3 wheels and a fuel mix.

Going forward I will strip the sound and the back seats ect to see if I can get her close to a mid 12 then, will consider tuning and other mods.

Thanks must go out to the Durban Fanatics, as always, a helpful bunch that's always full of K@K. Thank you to Mr Icechilli for the use of his semis and for driving my bakkie with all our goodies in it, Kish2604 for the fuel mix, it worked like a charm, Ashman and Aqeel Kader for the pics and our local King of Minions, PJ for all his assistance throughout the day. Much appreciated boys and looking forward to the next event.

Well done. And excellent write up.

With regards to getting into the mid 12s. Try a weight reduction in the driver. I'm sure you will hit the 10s then.
