I have been tempted for a while to have smash and grab installed and finally took the plunge.

Kuvi@VPSRandburg fitted a 35% 100 micron film and I am chuffed with how it turned out.

Looking good... And i see the exhaust tips are nice and shiney too:rollsmile:

I always make sure I clean them properly and then finish them off with metal polish.

Dirty exhaust tips are a no go:coolShake:

An update is probably long overdue, so here goes:

Every E90 owner will know how terrible the stock sound is, so an upgrade was inevitable.

I opted to DIY the whole process as it would work out cheaper.

I started by upgrading the front door speakers first to get an idea of how “big” I would have to go to get decent sound. This was also the cheapest upgrade.

I opted for 4” Hertz DCX100.3 Coaxials. Mounting rings were cut out of steel seeing as the Hertz speakers require 4 holes and the OEM speakers have 3.

To replace the front 2 speakers, fit the mounting rings, apply sound deadening and fit everything back in the car took about 1.5hours max and it is worth every second.

The coaxials do bring out sharper (sometimes more harsh) sounds. This is apparently due to the OEM headunit having a preset equalizer designed to make stock speakers sound better than they are. I have heard this can be cancelled out by means of programming, but have not done enough homework to find out where, how etc.

Overall I am happy with the improvement. Sound quality is miles better, the fit looks factory (speaker mesh etc. all fits) and the speaker provides a wider range than stock.

Next step will be to upgrade the underseat bass drivers and connect a 4-channel amp to the bass drivers and coaxials.

Some photos of the installation:

Now just to upgrade those subs under the seats! #DoefDoef

Nice work there... Where did you have the mounting rings made?

A contact of my father had them made for me. All engineering/steel shops will be able to make them. Inner diameter is around 100mm and outer diameter is around 140mm IIRC.

Excellent move there Ferdi... would love to hear it in person. Must b awesome

:tiptoe:

It really is an awesome upgrade from stock. Nothing to blow you away (yet), but not bad for around R850 all in.

Nice work, does your car have the tweeters?

No it doesn’t have tweeters, that’s why I opted for coaxials in the doors instead of normal 4” mids without tweeters.

ah ok, and BMW being BMW, they probably cut corners that didn't put the tweeter sails by the A Pillar, meaning if you wanted splits you would have to modify or change your door trim.

You are spot on there!

I didn’t want to go through the hassle of finding door sails/trims with tweeter holes and then finding/wiring tweeters in, so the coaxials had to do the job, which they are doing well.

Took me about 3 months to locate a set of the window sails... Picked them up for 700 including oem tweeters... These just connect to the oem speaker connector

That’s not a bad price at all. I was looking at getting them from the dealers and they had none is stock, so I also didn’t want to wait ages for it to arrive.

So...the time has come for the tractor to be given some more horses courtesy of RK Motion on Wednesday.

I took the car to KAR this morning for a baseline run and I’m really happy with the results. The car seems to be in good health.

I will probably go for a map with less smoke (not crazy about the smoke). This will obviously mean less power than I could potentially get, but I’m fine with that at the moment.

Below the STOCK dyno sheet:
