Hi Fanatics
Need advice as to the next step please.
Apologies in advance but trying to give as much detail.
Quick synopsis:
- Wife called me plumes of white smoke behind car.
- Shes super vigilant due to previous “mishaps” on other car. :)
- Immediately pulls over in about 100m switches car off.
- No low coolant warning light and straight to high Temp (Thermometer with squiggly lines below)
- After car stopped asked her to crank and see if starts - 4 or 5 cranks no start - I say leave it.
- Get it flatbedded to my place - have a mechanic that I’ve used for my VW diesels close by. He comes. Quick check by him tell him what happened. 4 or 5 cranks. By the way it’s an auto. No start. Says white smoke = turbo popped.
- So get turbo removed ( lots of oil in intake pipe) Told turbo intake seals collapsed, so reconned by Gabby Fastec.
- Refitted Turbo with all new gaskets new oil etc. On start up, which he said took a couple of tries. Ran a bit. Said he saw a water leak from thermostat housing. Stopped car. Looked like leak was between housing and pump so he opened and just used some silicone. Refilled with non BMW coolant. Bled system. Mine only has the one Bleeder screw on coolant reservoir.
- Idea was to get car to me. 200m away. It was late Saturday. Then to order new thermostat housing and thermostat together with proper coolant and and do it proper. He also need space in his shop for Monday morning.
- All good. When car gets to me. Still smoking he says will take a while to clear up due to oil in system.
- All boost pipes cleaned with high pressure according to him. Intercooler not.
- I say can I take the car for a short drive around the block and come park he says yes. He leaves. I get some shoes on. Get to car. Crank takes a couple of tries but starts.
- Seems like battery was a bit pap from his cranking. New battery 3 months old.
- So gets started as I get to complex security gate and I stop car stalls. Battles to start but does I drive out. Drive around 200m and then back at gate. Just a short test drive. Low coolant light comes on.
- Shucks stop immediately. Car not even warm.
- Have some water with me so top up. Thermostat housing looks dry. So think just the last bit of air is out the system.
- Try start. Car refuses too. Looks like cranking amps not enough.
- so remove Battery. Leave car there as is. Take battery and put on charge over night.
- So decide to err on side of caution. Was gonna but new inter-cooler, proper coolant, proper bleed before drove the car anymore.
- Next morning. With charged battery. Car starts easy. Drive the 100m or so to my place, park car. To wait for parts. Takes a couple days.
- Get parts. Change intercooler. Double check boost pipes everything refitted. Thermostat and housing changed. Wanted to start bleeding procedure. Car starts after refilling coolant to start bleeding process.
- Used 50-50 blue coolant mix.
- Coolant starts pushing coolant out of bottle with pressure.
- Stop immediately. Now what?
- Check No oil in coolant. Just the pressure pushing it out.
- Open oil cap. Not milky but when put finger in there’s definite water with the oil.
- I’m fed up. Leave till next day.
- Check next day top up coolant. Bleed screw and cap open.
- Try crank to start - no start, But water still pushing out of bottle and looks like water still in oil but not milkshake.

ADVICE please!!!
- Next step. What did I miss.
- I love this car.

Note- Water pump, thermostat and housing changed Dec 2021. Including belt and tensioner. Due to the mechanical pump leaking. No over heating etc afterwards.
- Only issue was in Dec 2022. While doing routine checks. I over zealously tightened the dreaded bleed screw and it was brittle and broke. Bought brand new GW bottle replaced. New coolant bleeding procedure to the T. Alles.
- Only other issue since then was oh the radio stopped working- bought another replaced. All good.
- And then the dreaded white smoke and what we thought was the Turbo.
- Car on 270xxx km. Lots of preventative stuff done. Damper pulley. Services on time etc etc.

Sorry again for long read.
Please please please.
What next???

TiA for any input.

Wow!!! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: What great support guys? No secrets just was only back on the forum now.Head gasket blown. Looks like there was a coolant leak on first startup after turbo replacement that was not picked up.The cranking to get the car initially started seemed to have been a factor in the damage also seems to be oil by the injectors on top of the cam cover. Gas pushing through the water bottle on cranking. Rebuild or sell as non-runner??? Getting prices. Everybodys panties unknotted now 😬
So any recommend shops that could rebuild this in the Honeydew/ Kya Sands area.
Recomendations?

Around 35k also considering that. Always so skeptical of being able to get a decent low mileage one. Seems like a lucky packet. Then good workmanship as well with out breaking clips and damaging stuff. I would love to take it on DIY. But too much pressure at work at the moment with big projects. Let’s get some prices in and then take it from there. Still open for recommendations for workshops/mechs to use.

Just buy the tools and do it yourself. Its not that difficult.

Ended up with an Import with all the major service bits redone, including chain and thermostat etc.
Head was redone first and was an expensive mistake as there was a crack on the block and the reconned head did not solve the issue.
Bought a brand new exhaust cam as well. 8k alone.
Did a EGR and Intake flap delete as well oh and turbo redone by Fastec as well.
Now need to sort out a heavy steering wheel and get aircon regassed.
All the parts not used are for sale. Can't post in for sale section here.
