e46 320d boost comes in late

Hello everyone
I recently had my turbo refurbished, but since then, the car only starts to pull from around 2400 RPM. Before that, although i can hear the turbo working, there is barely any power or boost.

There are no fault codes showing up, and I’ve already replaced both the MAP and MAF sensors. I can't hear any boost leaks, and the actuator has supposedly been tested and confirmed to be working.

Despite all this, the car still doesn't build proper boost at low RPMs. Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

From my experience with this problem on my E46,

The Actuator needs to be set correctly.

Take it back to the place that did your turbo and get them to set it. It is done manually on the actuator rod.

I suggest you look closely at the egr pipe that connects to the egr. Tighten that clamp as tight as you can. The other thing that could be a problem is that the vacuum line/s to the turbo could be damaged or leaking. Check that out as well. Could be the lines at the actuator valve could be the wrong way round.

Sounds like either a boost or a vacuum leak. These are impossible to "hear" so you would either need to use a smoke detector or the good ol fashioned way of spraying soapy liquid on all the joins/connectors and see if there is any bubbles. With the age of these cars, it would also make sense to replace all the vacuum lines with a good quality silicone hose or oem replacements. Also check the o-rings on the intercooler couplers .
