Considering buying a PS5 Slim - options / advice / considerations?

Hi all,

I seem to be caving into the itch for a PS5, probably due to it being winter, and little inclination to be out in the cold.

So with the PS5 Slim being launched, that seems to be the way to go. I think it's still up in the air about whether to get the digital edition, or the disc edition.

Over and above the console, what else should I be thinking of?

Some things I would like down the road:
  • Extra controller (do I get an additional standard issue duel sense controller, or something else?
  • Bluetooth headphones / buds
  • Charging accessories
To help justify the purchase, it would be nice to have some games suitable for young girls / family games. Any recommendations here?

Thanks

Definitely go with the Slim version, this has the latest hardware (cooling, etc) ...also it is significantly smaller than the OG PS5 which almost needs its own tv stand:ROFLMAO:

I have a disc version of the OG PS5 ...and I have never used a disc, so would recommend going with the Digital version to save some bucks.

The PS Deluxe or Extra subscription is something to consider, the catalog of games in there make them worth it (imo), the year sub is expensive compared to Gamepass for example, but it beats buying physical games. (the subscription is currently 30% off - a discount which does not come around often). You will find a lot of family/kids games on here as well.

Extra Controller - i'd say stick to dualsense, unless you looking for something more 'professional' - notably the battery life isn't great on these controller, so consider the charging dock. They do charge up relatively quickly.

You can use any bluetooth headset if im not mistaken.

Pro tip: if you have any friends/family with digital games - these can be shared and played together for free (basically 1 game can be played on 2 consoles/accounts simultaneously). Additionally, digital games are often cheaper than the physical version.

Hope this helps.

If you have a library of physical PS4 games it may be worth getting the disc version, the price difference is like 10% anyway.

I had my nephew over for some games and the kiddies games these days are insanely infested with microtransactions. I'm appalled! (I say as I load into CS2 where some chinese guys are spending 250k USD on a skin).

How old are the kids? A lot of the narrative driven games of the last generation are really great, if they're early teens something like the drake series may be worth getting. part 4 is brilliant and one of the add ons had an all female lead pair (it was also great).

My last Playstation was a PS2 slim, lol. Skipped a few generations while I was trying to be a grown up, parenting and so on.

The girls are 8 and 11 now, but they do enjoy some old Nintendo from time to time. It probably goes without saying that they are glued to mobile phone games as well (Roblox, Minecraft, other stuff I don't even know what it's called).

I reckon I will go for a PS5 Slim, get an extra Duel Sense controller (no need for the fancy edge version). For headphones I will check at a later stage, depending how often I will be playing while others are around doing other things.

I have the original disc version. I buy Single player games and when I’m done I sell them sometimes. Some I keep like Elden ring. That’s the only reason there would be value in a disc version.

If that doesn’t sound like something you’d need then get a digital version and use ps plus and the store to get your games.

The PS5 controllers develop stick drift (a max pull) on the right stick even if you keep them dust free. This also happened on my battle beaver custom PS5 controller. My original controller was stored most of the time because I never used my ps that much in its first year. It made sense for me to get the dual sense edge controller because of the replaceable sticks. Nacon makes a good controller with Hall effect sensors and rear paddles/buttons. I use my controller on pc some of the time as well and works well.

Not all Bluetooth headsets connect to the PS5, my XM4s don’t connect via Bluetooth to the PS. But I would recommend getting a good set off the bat. I use the arctis pro wireless and after using quite a few different headset, dac and audio card setups, I settled on this because of ease of swopping between ps and pc. Also very good quality headset in the gaming space.

Digital version with PS plus if you don't have a disk collection to start with. Also, keep in mind with kids, disks don't last long so you would need to install and store/manage them all the time.

Game recommendations for girls/family: I can start with the Overcooked series and Moving out, gets played 80% of the time in our house with loads of laughs, truly fun for the whole family. It takes two is another great mention and then Unravel two is another great one.

I was trying to be a grown up,

Stop trying and get a gaming PC

<Runs away>

:ROFLMAO:

But seriously everyone has already given good advice. We have two switches for the kids and Nintendo exclusives and then each person at home has their own gaming PC...
My son even does Fifa on PC. I also still have my prior gen PSes (usually these were bought for 1 or 2 exclusive games and to double up as BD players) but I was not tempted to get the PS5 after the initial FOMO had died down.

I would definitely get the disc version if you have ANY kind of legacy media that you don't already have on a Plex/media server, because 4K 'streams' are still nothing close to what you see from actual physical media (and this seems to be getting worse rather than better). There is also this phenomenon of franchises being split across different services randomly as well as content disappearing entirely for SA. I have an EXTENSIVE library of movies/series and this is a factor for me.
