Cold start - engine noisy

Since I took the leap of faith and changed from Castrol to Liqui Moly (ignoring the many naysayers), my engine (E36 328i) is noisy from a cold start.:slap:

This is something which was not experienced before with the Castrol product. Considering doing another oil service soon and switching back to Castrol Magnetec. What a waste - I just hope that I have not damaged my engine too much in the process :bawling:

I also used the Octane Plus and Speed Tec products but I don't think that had an effect / caused the problem.

Any comments/thoughts ... ? Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I am more a fan of the shell oil you can buy at the pumps, the R40 a litre stuff, best oil available bar none

throw any shit in,the noise can be removed by the sound system, this is a bm motor built to last !!!!!!!!
Seriously though do the hydraulic tappets get air in when changing oil and then make a noise when ( cold ) starting ? Do these older engines not prefer a SG or SH grade of oil instead of a SL or so ?

Hey there

Define the sound you are getting and for how long and what viscosity engine oil you are using now and were using with the Castrol. ie - 10W40 etc etc

That sound could be the hydraulic lifters as many older cars have that issue after an oil change. It could also be a oil flow issue.

Let me know.

The sound is just there on cold start and goes away within about 5 seconds but this was not the case prior to the oil change. So yes, could be the lifters but it would be a huge coincidence if it was.
I will sms you the sound ... soon.

Hey Zabbo

Thanks for the clip. Deffo the Hydraulics Lifters.

As I explained on the phone.. Most older oils dont make use of a detergent in them. Because of the LL04 approvals on our oils the oil itself contains a detergent additive which helps clean the engine and prolong the life of the oil.

Your lifters were most probably clogged up with old oil (This is normal on all vehicles and is not a fault of the previous oil) and because of the Hydrocracked properties of Liqui Moly oils which allow penetration into the area where the lifters are and cleans it has probably removed the old oil and this is why you have this sound.

Only on startup:

This is where the Liqui Moly oil is actually doing a better job then the Castrol.

Magnatec is a 10W40. Meaning that:

At a cold startup your oils viscosity (Call it thickness) is at 10
Yet when the engine is at operating temp it is 40. (Which is thicker)

Now overnight the oil in your engine falls to sump leaving the upper parts of the engine including the lifters with only around 10% of the lubrication they actually require.

When you start your car it takes a certain amount of time for the oil to fully circulate the entire engine. Some info:

If your engine is cold and you start it:

0W40 - Instant engine penetration
5W40 - Takes up to 5 seconds to fully penetrate the engine
10W40 - 10-12 seconds
15W40 - 15-18 seconds

The reason you are getting those sounds for only a few seconds is because it is in those few seconds that those regions of the engine have not been lubricated. You are using a 5W40 and as I explained this is why the sound disappears after only a few seconds.

Most wear in a engine occurs on startup. You have less wear in your engine doing 220km/h for half an hour then you will by doing just one cold start. Hence why the Liqui Moly oil being a lower viscosity on startup allows quicker penetration which means quicker lubrication which means less wear on startup.

The lifters making a noise could be due to detergent in the oil. But at the same time you need not worry about the lifters as the oil is clearly protecting them as the sound disappears. If the lifters are buggered then this is wear and tear and has only been detected now because of the detergent removing the old oil which was probably clogging the lifters up and numbing the noise.

I hope this helps.

Lets please not climb onto the bandwagon of "Castrol is best" and Liqui Moly is ***. Its really pointless. If you want Castrol go buy it. If you want the current biggest oil company in Germany's oil which has better spec then Castrol then buy Liqui Moly.

Thank you

Mike
