From all of your experience , what will you recommend on a stock bmw n54 . No hardware mods .

MHD
JB4
COBB
CUSTOMER TUNE .

on a healthy N54 What kind of gains can be typically seen ON pump fuel and on say 20%Ethanol and any of the above method of tune ? any first hand experience welcome and comments on why you chose the method of tune .

Then on a FBO N54 . D/PIPES , DCI , CHARGE PIPE BOV,INTERCOOLER,EXHAUST,CARBON CLEANING

MHD
JB4
COBB
CUSTOMER TUNE .

Typically what sort of gains on a healthy N54 on pump and ethanol 20%

An actual tune is way better than the JB4. Only drawback is that you can't see real time data values without an OTG cable. Also if you are looking at a JB4 unit remember you'll want a Backend Flash to supplement the JB4. MHD is by far the cheapest option with a relatively simple install and easy to use OTS maps. Custom tunes will most likely use Protune or other software to adjust fueling, load limits, boost etc. Just as the MHD or BM3 OTS maps are user definable.

NB!!! before you start the modifications ask your tuner to take a look at the following:
Water Pump condition
Tapper gasket
HPFP- unless it was replaced on recall
Vacuum lines.
Turbo wastegate rattle
Oil condition
Plastic charge pipes
Spark plugs

N54 always make the best gains with e30 max. You're easily looking at 280 WKW+ 600NM+ (SW+DP)

Keep us posted ! Goodluck:)

Regardless of tuning method your charge pipe needs to be upgraded. It will pop as soon as you give it a little more boost than stock.
These eventually go even in stock form.

On the N54 the best mix from my personal opinion is a JB4 and MHD backend. The logging is spot on and easy to understand.
I will however say that if you go JB4 route get it from a house that specializes in JB4 and will provide you the right support. From experience its not just about chucking in the unit and going by the phrase let it "AUTO Tune". It might work for some but when you get into chasing power and how the car delivers that power there is secrets to the trade that only people who have invested time in this path that can get your car running like an absolute pleasure.

My first mod was JB4 and Charge pipe. This showed me all the little n54 gremlins that have been hiding away while the car was stock and then i started my maintenance before adding any further mods or increasing boost.

N54 is old now....it will need alot of maintenance. vacuum pipes and so on are probably starting to crack. I only found out what needed to be done when i fitted JB4 by logging and errors that came up.

Good luck.....its not easy/cheap to get the car running good power but when alls said and done you will appreciate it so much more.

Is it a bad thing that I have no intention at all from modding my N55 from stock? :fencelook:
